2,132 posts	I think it's all about a usage of words. Like when someone says this smells like trouble or you know...It's really just a phrase It is about how us teens act. Like when a group of teenagers are around it's not adult spirit, it smells like teen spirit...get it?

2,117 posts	i thought it was because "kurt smells like teen spirit" was sprayed on a wall at a party he went to by a mate of his. and it was a teenage girls deoderant. but he liked the words and kurt being kurt used them for a song he thought was a piss take of the pixies

While the songs on Nevermind wouldn't offer much more explicit, easily grasped meaning than those of Bleach, Cobain's lyrics were now one with his voice - his despondency, wrath, rage, disgust and humor all came through perfectly clearly, no matter how inscrutable his actual words were. As it turned out, Nevermind's most popular track was a typically murky Cobain exploration of meaning and meaningless, it had come to him by way of a very specific inspiration - namely, a deodorant. While Cobain was living on North Pear Street in Olympia, he had gone out one night with his friend Kathleen Hanna from the band Bikini Kill, a group that would become a pivotal force in the punk-feminist "Riot Grrl" movement of Olympia and Seattle. They decided to indulge one of their frequent recreational bents - a graffiti spree. After making up some Olympia establishments with such incitements as "God is Gay", they returned to Cobain's apartment, where Hanna marked up a wall with the sentence "Kurt smells like Teen Spirit". Cobain took it as a compliment, thinking it was Hanna's interesting way of saying he still had the rebellious edge of an angry kid. But Hanna was actually putting some arch humor to use - "Teen Spirit" was actually the rather insipid, niche-marketed brand name of an underarm deodorant for young women put out by the Mennen company. It wasn't until after Cobain had written, recorded, and released the song that he realized a trendy anti-perspirant had provided the title for his tune.

'teen spirit' was this deodorant that was around at the time, and this girl had written that kurt smelled like it on the wall, hence 'smells like teen spirit'. he liked the words and decided to make a song out of them. i also heard that, originally, the group were doubtful over whether or not they should release as it had only been created as a bit of a piss-take

2,117 posts	ahh i was right. thought so! when kurt found out about the deodorant after, didnt he think it made it even more humorous. i mean didnt he think it added to the way nirvana thought it was a very pixies style track. thats wat i remember.

462 posts	I'm a big Nirvana fan,and after hearing tons of their songs,i still think 'smells like teen spirit' is one of my faves,even if it is kinda 'overplayed' i still like it and the video's cool too.It's just really about teens with their friends letting loose and having fun really.good old teen spirit!

52 posts	About the meaning, you're all partially right. Smells like teen spirit was a sentence writen on the wall by Tobi Vail's (at that time Kurt girlfriend) roommate. She knew that Vail used teen spirit as deodorant. Kurt liked the sentence, I believe I've read somewhere that he did get the meaning of it, not sure though, and so he used it as title for a song.

39 posts	ok i am a HUGE nirvana fan. Kurt had it all, great singing, and even better guitr skills. Smells like teen spirit is probably my favorite song from the many. Kick ass guitar parts!

52 posts	Great guitar skills? Look, I'm a great Nirvana fan too. And because I like Nirvana so much I know that that is bullshit. As you probably know as a fan Kurt played drums till he was 15. He learned to play guitar only when he was 16. He learned it from Krist btw. He couldn't sing and play and the same time. That's why Pat Smear toured with them. Besides the guitar parts you're talking about are bass parts played by Krist. Kurt Cobain wasn't a great guitar player.
