Prior to Nirvana, alternative music was consigned to specialty sections of record stores and major labels considered it to be, at the very most, a tax write-off. After the band's second album, 1991's Nevermind, nothing was ever quite the same, for better and for worse. This is without a doubt, the best Nirvana song ever recorded...but its not even my favorite Nirvana song. Does that make sense? idk, wat im trying to say is that the overall song is so brilliant, so perfect in every aspect that it is the best piece of art produced by Nirvana, but perhaps due to hearing it to many times or what not, most Nirvana fans, myself included, ... »

I do think it is about a relationship that's not working out. When I hear "We'll make a pact to learn from who ever we want without new rules, and we'll share what's lost and what we grew.." it always comes to my mind the fact of thinking about an open relationship because the one you're in is just too soffocating ("I can't let you smother me"). I like this song very much, but I think mostly everyone here is focused on the cliché of Nevermind and the singles Nirvana released.
