Dream Of Life, a DVD about Patti Smith's life, directed by Steven Sebring, is currently available, here's the trailer. 11 years of work for a cult film : an electric shock of rock culture !
Woman, artist, poet, singer, storyteller, painter, mother, militant, photographer... Patti Smith, exceptionnal personality with a lot of talent, is a legend. Godmother of the punk movement in the 70's, she's more than a rock icon : she's an icon, that's all. Born in 1946 in Chicago to a jazz singer father & a worker mother, she discovered music listening to The Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground & James Brown. In 1967, she moved to New York & met photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Her first single, in 1974, was a cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Hey Joe", one year before the album Horses, produced by John Cale. The legend began... "Everyone has various faces. I know that I'm not only a fashion photographer. And Patti Smith is not only a rock icon. That's why she's so important. There's something very crude, she's not artificial. Whether it's her poetry or her way to perform on stage, she's authentic. She lived a lot of tragic things & left them well. I know nobody like her" the documentary's director said.
The exhibition at Paris' Cartier Foundation showed her as a trendy artist & a rocker who loves Arthur Rimbaud & William Blake : thousands of spectators, seen in the media, Patti Smith was back & everywhere...
About Steven Sebring's film, it has first been aired on Arte on March 25 & the promotion (official selection for Berlin's Film Festival & Sundance Film Festival in 2007) is at its best. Only documentary about Patti Smith, Dream Of Life takes us into her unique way & her artistic expression, in every way. During 11 years, Sebring followed the singer, through her witness, her paintings, her photos & also her fights. Apart from some spectacular moments on stage, there are nice moments, like this one : Patti Smith reading a poem by Allen Ginsberg, with Philip Glass on piano, it's just breathtaking.
