She Writes The Songs That Make Her Cry

Rachael Yamagata has an unusual way of knowing when she's hit the spot when she writes one of the heartbreaking songs she's famous for.
She usually writes till deep in the night, like 4am, under candlelight.
And the moment she starts to cry, she knows she has 'hit something'.
'When I tear up, then I know that I've figured out a way to say what I've been dealing with,' the American singer-songwriter told The New Paper in her trademark husky voice during a recent interview.
Despite her penchant for sad songs, Yamagata says she remains upbeat.
'I think I'm very optimistic,' she said. 'I certainly write about the challenges of a relationship but it's always in a quest to overcome these challenges.'
Yamagata, whose father is Japanese-American and mother, Italian-German, performed at the Esplanade on Wednesday.
Four years have passed since the release of her first full-length album, Happenstance.
Her second album, Elephants... Teeth Sinking Into Heart, was released last year. Between then and now, much has changed in her life. And that has been reflected in her music.
Said Yamagata: 'I think the production on this record (Elephants... Teeth Sinking Into Heart) is very different. The sentiment is darker, there's a kind of richness.
'I think that came with experience, with age and travelling. More relationships, more of the work rollercoaster.'
Elephants... Teeth Sinking Into Heart is a double-disc album.
Lush and beautiful, the first disc (Elephants...) draws listeners in with its intimate quality. In contrast, the second disc, Teeth Sinking Into Heart, screams raw emotion, uncharacteristic of her usual style.
Of Teeth Sinking Into Heart, Yamagata said: 'I think when I was in there doing the rock songs, I wanted to make them dangerous rock songs, not so much pop rock.
'We really took the time to 'gritty' up the guitar sounds, so it was very in your face, very emphatic, very brass in a way.'
Performing these songs is often cathartic.
Said Yamagata: 'It's a relief to be able to get that emotion out in performance. It's like you get to share it with everybody.'
And while some of her songs border on cynicism, there is little trace of that in her.
'Every relationship has taught me more about life and inspired me. People have seen things in me that I didn't even see in myself. So it's always a growth process. I don't regret any of them,' she said.
So what does Yamagata hope for her fans to take away with them from her music?
She said: 'My greatest compliments are when people tell me I've somehow articulated what they wanted to say, what their emotions wanted to say but they couldn't, so they feel some comfort in that.
'When you identify that heartache, it helps you move beyond it and you're not stuck anymore.'
