Peppers hot at Federation Square

 In a spontaneous and unplanned half-hour set, three members of the California quartet wowed the huge crowd of about 4000 fans as they blended jazz, funk and rock in a experimental and mesmerising act.
What was tipped as being a Mozart performance turned into a frantic and chaotic 30-minute set that left fans screaming for more.
While many were pining to hear favourites like Californication and Under the Bridge, the band's ability to move away from hard rock and blend a mixture of genres impressed all onlookers.
Featuring guitarist John Frusciante, bass player Michael "Flea'' Balzary, drummer Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer on the keyboard, Smith said he had not made any plans for the set.
They were just excited to do what they loved most.
"We're going to just improvise ...and play some music and hopefully take it somewhere and make it interesting.
"This will be something different, a one-time completely spontaneous jam that (hasn't) happened before and won't happen in the future in exactly the same way. So I think it's kind of fun.''
The Red Hot Chili Peppers, including vocalist Anthony Kiedis, are in town for the Melbourne leg of their Aussie tour.
Despite having sell-out shows at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl, last night's performance was free.
Smith said Aussies had always been huge fans of the Peppers and they wanted to give them something special.
"I love coming here and we love coming here. It's a bit of that, you know, thank you-and-giving-back thing.
"Australia in general has been very, very supportive of our group from the very beginning. We've been coming over here (since) 1992 and Flea is from Melbourne and has family here, so there is a connection.
"It just seemed like a good place and time to do it."
Based on fans' reactions, it was the perfect thing to do.
Linda Williams, 20, from Bayswater, said she was inspired by their performance and is now bursting with her own music ideas.
"It was amazing, absolutely amazing. It's such a different style for them and it's so fantastic to see such an established band get out there and try something different,'' she said.
"I was blown away that they had so much more to offer than just the Chili's original sound.''
David Mazzarella, 26, from Fawkner, said the half-hour set was unbelievable.
"I'm a big fan and it was really good to see them. I don't know if it was rehearsed or free-flowing but it was good to see them jamming like that.''
