When people first hear The Rocket Summer, they usually think it is a band like any other with many band members. The truth is that The Rocket Summer is a one man band. Bryce Avary performs all vocals, guitars, drums and percussion, piano, bass, harmonica, synthesizers, organs, and more.
Bryce Avary was born on December 31st, 1983 in Colleyville, Texas. He began his obsession with music around the age of 12, when his dad bought him his first guitar from a pawn shop. Bryce began to teach himself guitar and the other instruments that he plays now. He started performing shows as a teenager in Dallas and Fort Worth Texas. As Bryce's amount of local fans grew, he made his first EP at the age of 16 in 2000 called 'The Rocket Summer EP.' Before he was about to put out the EP, his friend suggested that he name it instead of using his own name. "He was reading a book called 'Martian Chronicles' and one of the chapters was called 'Rocket Summer,'" says Bryce, "so he was like 'You should name it The Rocket Summer.' I just thought it was really cool so it doesn’t really have like a super meaningful meaning. It was just kind of a casual thing that I did when I was a kid." After putting out his first EP, Bryce's music appeared on The Adventure Club segment of the KDGE radio station, and quickly became the most requested local band on the program that year.
With increased interest in the music from local, national, and international magazines and the EP selling in 5 continents, in 2003 Bryce Avary recorded and released his debut album Calendar Days. With a $15,000 budget, the album was recorded in Kansas on the label The Militia Group. The album was praised as being extremely uplifting, and included varied music. One track including a 6th grade choir that his younger sister was in from Texas. The album sold well throughout the United States and Japan.
In November 2004, Bryce began working with producer Tim O'Heir in Brooklyn to record his second album Hello, Good Friend. The Rocket Summer has toured the US and Japan extensively and has gained a large fan base. The album was released by a Christian music label to Christian retail outlets. Although it is not immediately obvious in his lyrics, Bryce is a Christian and lets his faith influence his lyrics and his music.
He has now signed with Island Def Jam Records for his next record, Do You Feel, which was released on July 17th, 2007. The first single from the album is So Much Love. The Rocket Summer has already recorded a video for So Much Love and it has been released.
On May 3rd, the song "Break It Out", from Do You Feel was added to the TRS website and Myspace. Also, tracks such as "Do You Feel" and "So In This Hour", after being included on a CD Sampler, and "Save" have been leaked online. On July 11, the entire album was leaked online.
In January 2005, Bryce married his high school sweetheart Tara.
Of course, Bryce can't perform all of his instruments live alone. He performs with his high school friends Seth Brewton on guitar, Matt Bergeland on bass, and Tommy Quinn on drums. He also tours with his wife Tara Avary for selling merchandise, Brent Okuley as the tour manager and sound engineer, Hansel as the guitar tech, and Ryan Graves as the road assistant.
Seth Brewton has been touring with The Rocket Summer since the very beginning. He used to help sell merchandise, shoot confetti, and drive the van. A little later, he played guitar on "Movie Stars and Super Models," when Bryce would take the mic and dance while singing. When TRS officially become a full touring band, Seth continued as the guitarist for the whole show. He also sings backup vocals, and occasionally plays the tamborine and the keyboard. When Bryce does small performances on radio stations, Seth joins him to play guitar and sing backup vocals while Bryce plays the piano. Seth has a wife named Joanna, and he's a big fan of owls!
Matt Bergeland began touring with The Rocket Summer in October 2005 as the videographer and tech assistant. He filmed hours and hours of concert/post-concert footage that will hopefully make it to a DVD one day! In March 2007, Matt became the full-time bass player. He also sings backup vocals! Several years ago, he used to play in the band My Spacecoaster.
Tommy Quinn began playing drums with The Rocket Summer during the west coast tour with Hellogoodbye in summer 2005. He and the rest of TRS have been friends since middle school. Tommy and Bryce were in the band Charlie-27 together in middle school. Tommy likes baseball, history, psychology, and Kurt Vonnegut.
When Bryce Avary asked what he would do if he weren't a musician, he replied, "I'm deathly afraid of not doing this because I have no idea what I would."
