| Song lyrics |
I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the Lord
But you don’t really care for music do you?
It goes like this, the fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled King composing Hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing on the roof
Her beauty in the moonlight overthrew you
She tied you to a kitchen chair
She broke your throne, she cut your hair
And from your lips she drew the hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Maybe I’ve been here before
I know this room, I’ve walked this floor
I used to live alone before I knew you
I’ve seen your flag on the marble arch
Love is not a victory march
It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
There was a time when you let me know
What’s real and going on below
But now you never show it to me, do you?
And remember when I moved in you
The Holy Dark was moving too
And every breath we drew was hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Maybe there’s a God above
And all I ever learned from love
Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you
And it’s not a cry you can hear at night
It’s not somebody who’s seen the light
It’s a cold and it’s a broken hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah
Hallelujah, hallelujah

It was actually Leonard Cohen who wrote this song. Not Jeff Buckley. Though he does a great rendition of it | 12-07-2004 22:48 jeffyd | 1 posts

Leonard Cohen did write the original but the version seen here is Jeff Buckley's. The lyrics to Buckley's version are different in the second half from Leonard original. | 07-09-2004 01:12 Yenni | 51 posts

John Cale wrote the alternate lyrics in 1991. Rufus's version is very similar to his, though Rufus's voice is much better. Jeff Buckley first recorded it in 1994, and his version is also beautiful. None of these sound all that much like the original by Leonard Cohen, but that's not such a bad thing. Also, k. d. lang's version from her album earlier this year is excellent. | 30-12-2004 08:08 thirty_notes | 12 posts

The first time I heard this song was in "shrek". A while back in december, a guy I liked played this song and sang too, but I din't recognize it. Some girls in my choir class were singing it, and I knew it sounded familiar. The girl had the sheet music, but the piano part wasn't correct. We have started singing this song in choir, and I really want to learn how to play it. If someone could show me wher to get the piano sheet music for this song, it would be greatly appreciated ^_^ thank you | 22-03-2005 14:18 bondie | 29 posts
