| Sam Cooke was born Samuel Cook in Clarksdale, Mississippi (he added an "e" onto the end of his name because he thought it added a touch of class). He was one of eight children of Rev. Charles and Mrs. Annie Mae Cook. The family moved to Chicago in 1933. Cooke began his musical career as a member of a quartet with his siblings, the Singing Children, followed by a turn as a teenager as a member of the Highway QCs, a gospel group. | 1 posts | Artist comment @ Sam Cooke i had no idea this man was so influential to so many great artist. obviously i'd heard of him, but honestly couldn't have named one of his songs, me being in my early twenties. i heard a contestant on american idol sing "A Change Is Gonna Come", and i remebered hearing the original before, i just hadn't realized it was the great Mr. Cooke. So then i started researching some of his music and came to realize just much he lived up to his legendary staus. and now that i think about it, i can hear his style, his influence in many artist, even today. i could listen to anything this man sings and i admire his unmistakable talent. |
