AboutSara Alexandra Lima Tavares was a Portuguese singer, composer, guitarist and percussionist, born on February 1, 1978 in Lisbon, Portugal and dead on November 19, 2023 in Lisbon.
Sara Tavares already has behind her a career that has given her a prominent place in the Portuguese musical scene. Portuguese and Capeverdian at the same time, but with the world in her heart, she is recognized as one of the nation's best contemporary singers.
Sara Tavares was only 16 years old when she won two of Portugal's most prestigious TV music contests. Born out second generation Cape Verdian immigrants, Sara grew up between two cultures. Initially known as a singer and composer of Gospel, Funk and Soul, she gradually incorporated more of her African music in her compositions.
Sara Tavares represented Portugal in Dublin's 1994 Eurovision Song Contest and reached the 8th place with the song "Chamar A Música".
She was chosen by Walt Disney Productions to record the Portuguese version of the song "God Help the Outcast" for the film "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and her interpretation of this song was awarded by Walt Disney Records U.S.A. the distinction of the best foreign version recorded in the entire world, 1996.
Her second album Mi Ma Bô, produced by Parisian Lokua Kanza, reached gold in her native Portugal and was a mix of African rhythms and melodic pop songs. After a long wait of five years, finally her new album Balancé in February 2006. In this record produced by Sara herself, she wrote and composed all the songs and played many of the instruments. Balancé is a beautiful record in which Sara showed to be a very talented contemporary singer/songwriter, that has managed to combine in a subtle and honest way contemporary music with her African roots.
She sang in three different languages (portuguese, criolo and english) showing us how universal is the language of music.
