Seventh Rain - News

The Life of a Music Addict

There is something to be said about a band that uses its influence to help improve the lives of bullied teens. Based out of Calgary, Seventh Rain is made up by Ryan, Rich, Luke and PJ. Some of them have the experience of getting bullied. They play for schools across Alberta and are speaking to students letting them know that they are not alone.

They have released their sophomore album The Ghost in Me in August, which is a strong follow up to Byda. This review begins the same way all my reviews begin: with a long car ride, just the music and the road.

Lyrically the album is strong. Ryan has a knack for writing catchy choruses. I can’t help but try and sing along after hearing it just once or twice. The upbeat songs are well written and slower songs are just as strong. Songs like The Ghost in Me and I’m Here have a wonderful way of drawing you in.

Most songs on the radio these days are following a formula for success, leaving us with unbelievable songs about love, heartache and hope. Seventh Rain takes on these subjects, sound genuine and their actions toward bullying only cement the sentiment. Knowing the honesty that lies behind the lyrics enables listeners to readily connect with the music, which is a key to success in this industry.

Instrumentally the album is clean. The guitar riffs are light hearted and fun when the song calls for it; the drum and bass line are distinctively strong, which provide a great backbone. They have a chemistry that comes from playing together for so many years and it shines through their songs. There is a steady back and forth play between guitar and vocals which keep the songs clean, instead of struggling to hear the words behind a screaming guitar.

The vocals for The Ghost in Me are at times a little rough compared to their previous album Byda. I do not mean this in the extreme cases of some bands like Nickelback. I simply have noticed that in some songs Ryan’s voice has a roughness that was not heard in their first album. Their remake of the song I’m Here, which was originally on Byda, is neat. This time around, this song has a bridge added, and that deepens its meaning.

The Ghost in Me is great, and can be enjoyed in one sitting or a song at a time. I highly recommend this album if you are a fan of bands like Ten Second Epic, All Time Low or Mayday Parade. Speaking from experience this album is great for road trips.

If you would like to contact the band regarding their anti-bullying campaign, and to have them come to your school you can reach them on their myspace (myspace.com/7thrain) or directly at theband@seventhrain.com.
