DVD - Sia - TV is My Parent

Australian born singer Sia Furler has forged herself a very successful career since leaving these sandy shores for the UK a decade ago. Her voice became familiar to Brits earlier this decade as one of the voices of electronic duo Zero 7 while she was simultaneously releasing a string of solo singles such as Drink to get Drunk, setting the scene for what has become a particularly quirky artist persona.

At some point of late, Sia has also found herself the subject of much love from home. This was clearly evident when her maiden tour of Oz earlier this year became a series of sold out shows. It may have come as a surprise to Sia, who only really jetted in and out of Australia for Christmases this past decade, but there were those of us who were always watching and loving her music from home, wondering when we were going to get a chance to see her at the local.

The live concert DVD, TV Is My Parent, was recorded at Hiro Ballroom, Los Angeles, in 2007 and this DVD allays all fears – Sia has not lost lost her Aussie accent or larrikin humour just because of her long absence.

It’s rare to see an artist with so much personality and ease with her crowd; Sia jokes constantly, freely telling the crowd whatever random thoughts are crossing her mind (not as scary or as shallow as it sounds – rather, she shows LA that it’s OK to lighten up). Even as a DVD viewer, you feel refreshed watching her.

With what has become a very solid catalogue of songs and, of course, her distinctly husky voice, Sia conquers the Ballroom. Maybe some of the crowd just went because they’d heard Breathe Me on Six Feet Under, or got caught up in the internet sensation that was Buttons, but they would have left with many more songs ringing in their ears; Day Too Soon, Sunday or You Have Been Loved. And for those prepared to do a bit of digging, there are many more that did not make it into the concert.

Throughout Sia’s career there’s been a pervasive feeling that this is someone opening themselves up completely, kinks, quirks and all. Her song writing is personal and her delivery unusual; and just how many artists could you describe as jazz and soul meets pop and rock in a new rave package? As the DVD Extras show, she’s incredibly sweet too.

Sia Furler remains a revelation, ten years on. Watch this if you want to see a contender for Australia’s finest ever vocalist, because she’s the real deal.
