Song lyrics
I am just a poor boy
Though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocketful of mumbles
Such are promises
All lies and jests
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest

When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station
Running scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

Lie la lie...

Asking only workman's wages
I come looking for a job
But I get no offers
Just a come-on from the whores on Seventh Avenue
I do declare, there were times when I was so lonesome
I took some comfort there

Lie la lie...

Then I'm laying out my winter clothes
And wishing I was gone
Going home
Where the New York City winters aren't bleeding me,
Leading me, going home.

In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains

Lie la lie...

Very good song!! And actully so much better then the original version of Dylan. The last verse:

"In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of every glove that laid him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains"

is a masterpiece to me. And when Art raise is voice at "or >CUT him till he cried out" is so extremly powerful

This song reminds me so much of when I was a kid, just 10yr old.
I was sent away from my family into a childrens home where I knew no-one.
I would have to catch a train back there during term time.
Waiting on the cold wet tain platform, on my own thinking about nothing except when I'd see my brothers and sisters again.

2nd verse:

When I left my home and my family
I was no more than a boy
In the company of strangers
In the quiet of the railway station
Running scared
Laying low, seeking out the poorer quarters
Where the ragged people go
Looking for the places only they would know

[b]I love S & G. and The Boxer is a musical masterpiece. The way several instruments were implemented and the soulfullness of the lyrics is just so awesome. The song never loses its appeal. LOVE IT!!!

Yes,sure,Great^,however if YOU lived through it,as I have,it just takes a lot of the gusto/enthuisiasm out of it.

Sorry, I know I STILL haven't achieved peace with my "issues".

[HERE I GO AGAIN,BRINGING DOWN THE RATINGS OF A GREAT SONG BY POSTING MORE THAN ONE COMMENT,WHAT BS, BUT,HAD TO SAY]....

The words are a bit wrong.I have squandered my EXISTENCE,not my "resistance."
