Snow Patrol - Biography

07-07-2006 20:24 | 0 reaction(s) | add reply
Snow Patrol formed in 1994, when at Dundee University Lightbody bumped in to a guitarist, Mark McClelland. They clicked immediately, liking the same bands. They decided to form a band. Snow Patrol came as a result.

When deciding upon a name, they chose the 'Polar Bears' however ex-Jane’s Addiction bassist, Eric Avery, had already claimed this name. To avoid a lawsuit, Snow Patrol was chosen.

In June of 1999, Snow Patrol released their debut, 'Starfighter Pilot'. Their debut album had already been released, in 1998, with a cheeky title of 'Songs For Polar Bears'. They were signed to Scotland's Jeepster records, home to Belle and Sebastian.

With another album, 'When It's All Over We Still Have To Clear Up', released in 2001, the relationship between the band and Jeepster records frayed. They parted their ways.

The band stuck with their original name, ignoring talk of changing the name to 'The' something. They began writing Final Straw, their third album during this time. Lightbody also, during this time, recorded an album with his solo project, 'The Reindeer Section'.

To many, Final Straw has become Snow Patrol's best work with themes of lost love and the horror of the Iraq conflict influencing the lyrics.

With demos for Final Straw in circulation the band were quickly signed up to Polydor. Also, by this time, Snow Patrol had got an extra guitarist. Nathan Connolly, a former HMV worker was introduced to the band and then reluctantly joined the band.

He and the fellow band members may come from Belfast, Northern Ireland, but they are based in Glasgow. The band is currently made up of:
Gary Lightbody (Vocals, guitar)
Mark McClelland (Bass)
Johnny Quinn (Drums)
And, Nathan Connolly (Guitar)

Final Straw received wide ranging critical acclaim upon it's release last year and two of the singles already released, 'Spitting Games' and 'Run' were top hits in the record charts. Final Straw and these singles have provided Snow Patrol with their mainstream breakthrough. The influence of bands like Radiohead and Coldplay are apparent on 'Run' and 'Somewhere A Clock Is Ticking'. The single, Run, being their first release from Final Straw, debuted at number 5 in the February charts of 2004.

Lightbody remains down to earth hoping “that at the end of the day I can still pop down to the supermarket to pick up my milk. I don't want to get too much hassle when all I really want is a brew."

After a change in line up (Mark Mc Clelland left under circumstances that Snow Patrol remain silent on.) After the replacement was secured, Snow Patrol resumed work on their new album, 'Eyes Open', released in 2006.

'Eyes Open' found Snow Patrol critically appluaded in a way unknown to them before 'Final Straw'. The the chiming 'You're All I Have' was the lead off single, sounding like a more mature 'Chocolate'. The beautiful 'Chasing Cars' was next, while not as dramatic as past works such as 'Run' still captured the beauty of Lightbody's newly-improved voice.
