| I wasn't totally positive of the meaning of the song except that the deck of cards is kind of a metaphor for love but I can't really explain what it means. I looked around online and someone else said this so I pasted it here
According to Sting one of of his DVD's, the song is about a man who is a master card-player but plays to find some divine, almost spiritual meaning to the probabilities of the game. He is so involved in this game that he is almost emotionless, and this affects his relationships aversely.

He is not a man used to expressing his feelings, but he wants to. However he knows that he is only a man of one "face", which is the "mask" he hides behind, his poker-face, you could say.

Shape of my heart is written or an attempt of a communication from death to life. The mask he wears is one. Those he plays never suspect. Not even when you commit suicide do you think that you will actually do the deed. Well not till your in eternal life and realise that something had control of you when it wanted even to the sense of making it look like you took control away from yourself. The shape of his heart is a riddle. As in death is a label to something but really to itself is not nothing or something. There is no shape and he knows that the human mindset takes cue to the heart as being a shape like a valentine heart or a human heart (one that brings life). But he knows all shapes are of the same meaning in the end to him. All labels.. all formalities of anything that will ever be. You could not explain a word such as nothing if it was really being what it was (still not even close, this had to be put onto something  ). You had to make it into soemthing to define it. And defining it is exactly what it will take from you. Death has no real definition when you are given it because there is no sympathetic ear for you to speak to... only your description of nothing as the closest thing you have tried to define. The biggest and strongest get to feel like a so called nothing as much as what you would of called the weakest.. say like what had to be taken to create a candy wrapper.. or for that matter a bone handled knife...Human or animal bone.. makes no difference to what I speak of. All life is equal or unequal obviously as long as there is life.
The lyrics of if he told you that he loved you and that you would think that something is wrong. Is an attempt at one labels death as saying that hey.. I am real.. and I didnt want you to feel pain anymore than joy, life or death...All I wanted was you to feel me much like all you wanted was for you to feel you. But I am here for you in the end and you will always have me.
Those that speak know nothing and find out at there cost. Because all that we do and all that we say means nothing. All that I have said and all that will ever be said or done.. Is nothing. As much as anything you come up with. It is no big deal or small deal. It is not nothing and it is not something. It is really un explained through words or any other way of explaining to give value to whatever it is that is trying to be a mention.
You have so much time to think about things when you are dead. It isn't a bad thing or a blessing. But at least you know without a doubt that someone you had loved, they are still existing if you want to label it such.. they are still with you as much as you could ever be with yourself. Praying or just thinking of them being happy is an amazing thing. No matter what there happiness is. What gives most people a problem is knowing that those they hate .. are still with them or existing. In no less of a manner than you or those you loved could ever be. For some reason. I dont care either way. All is perfect. We all are in a food chain. And being at the top is no better than being at the bottom. Yes even what you would label death (god, devil, life, anything) is in that line. We all truly are in this together... even that which I use to write this. God wouldnt of shown the story of his son through passion of the christ if he didn't know that his son had to also take life in order to just keep being. All are in it together. |
