The recent publicity surrounding the Sugababes made most people almost forget about their new album. With the fourth line-up now settled and the drama dying down, the girls get ready to release their first outing as Sugababes 4.0 (and seventh under the 'Sugababes' name).

Whilst the flurry of negative comments overwhelm the media, anyone who follows current pop artists will know that, in order to keep ahead of the game, artists have to re-evaluate their sound with each album, and Sweet 7 is definitely no exception. Signed to Jay-Z's label Roc Nation, the 'Babes have had helping hands from RedOne, The Smeezingtons, Fernando Garibay, Ryan Tedder and Ne-Yo, amongst other credible producers. Their transformation into an R&B/Dance-Pop band was inevitable, even without the departure of Keisha Buchanan. The Sugababes survived by sounding different in the past, but with the proof of their previous album 'Catfights And Spotlights', 'different' is fast going out of fashion, and new, shinier production prevails.

The Sugababes first single 'Get Sexy' was catchy, but weak in comparison to the rest of the album. Most of the songs, such as 'About A Girl', 'Miss Everything' (featuring Sean Kingston) and 'No More You' see the band spanning into the Americanised pop-market, whereas tracks such as 'Thank You For The Heartbreak' and 'Give It To Me Now' are somewhat reminiscent of earlier days of the band.

Newest member Jade Ewen may have received some bad press for replacing the last 'original' member Buchanan, but she adds to the group what it sorely needed. Where Range provides the softer-yet-sultry vocals, Berrabah adding the attitude and cool, Ewen injects power into the band, showing off impressive vocal chops in 'Wait For You', 'Thank You For The Heartbreak' and 'Little Miss Perfect', and sweeter harmonies with the current members that place the Sugababes solidly on top of the game in the vocals department over their competitors.

Overall, Sweet 7 may not be popluar with older fans, but it proves a smart decision. The album may not win any awards for originality, but the girls are definitely heading in the right direction with the new sound. The older fans must remember that the only change between Keisha's 'Sweet 7' and Jade's is the vocals, and it is proven that Ewen is the superior. Look past the drama of the past and enjoy an up-to-date, polished Sugababes with the sound of 2010.
