okay, now anyone who thinks sum 41 is like blink-182 or green day might have a point if you listen to that ass-awful "underclass hero" album, but this album... is BY FAR AND AWAY ONE OF THE BEST AND UNDERRATE ALBUMS EVER. that's right - ever. when the sums put out "dtli?," everyone was like, "wow, where did this agressive, heavy sound come from?" i didn't really know either, but i loved it. granted, i didn't really start listening to sum 41 until a year ago, but i pretty much bought their albums in chronological order. then i bought chuck and was just absolutley amazed. this band didn't just blow me away with the even heavier, faster tracks, but they had PERFECTED the ballad, and threw in a few of them on this cd at the perfect times. this album is AMAZING and everyone should give it a listen, as it comes as a complete and definately pleasant surprise.
1. intro - great way to start the album off. you can tell right away that this is not the "fat lip" sum 41 you've been used to.
2. no reason - generally touted as the best song on the album by hardcore sum fans, i think it's certainly a great, energetic way to start off the album, but it's definately not the best track.
3. we're all to blame - okay, now THIS is the best track not only on this album, but (this may sound ridiculous) it's probably one of the best song on any album of the past decade. the way this track shift between heavy and soft so perfectly just continues to baffle me. absolutley amazing song with a great message.
4. angels with dirty faces - easily the best intro section of any song on the album. the beginning is just so somber and depressing, but the mood quickly shifts into hardcore.
5. some say - although the chorus is basically the same one as in their "aknf" song "handle this," it works much better in this song, as this is the first of the three ballads on this incredible album.
6. the bitter end - okay, this song is so metal, it's ridiculous. i mean, i used to think "pain for pleasure" was metal for sum 41, but this is just track is just in your face for three minutes of evil. dave's soloing is genius, and, as always, stevo's drumming is explosive and highly underrated.
7. open your eyes - not one of my favorites, but still a great solo.
8. slipping away - in my opinion, this song is sum 41's ballad masterpiece. it's so eery and sad, but it totally works. the orchestral bit shows that this band (at the time) was not afraid to take risks, and when they do, they pay off.
9. i'm not the one - again, a very metal song with some intense screaming during the verses. the bridge, however, is a bit too reminiscent of linkin park in their prime, but, nonetheless, this is another solid song.
10. welcome to hell - lyrically sticking with the evil/war-like theme of this album, this is easily the most punk one on "chuck." i'm not too crazy about the main riff, as it could've easily been used in hundreds of songs over the years, but the song itself still quenches my hardcore thirst.
11. pieces - the final slow song on this cd, pieces is simple and subtle, but it completely works. some great vocals and very appropriate solo on this song, as well.
12. there's no solution - again, VERY linkin park-ish but still a beautiful song. it's a bit too heavy to be a ballad, but is one of the more emotional songs on the cd.
13. 88 - okay, if "slipping away" is sum 41's ballad masterpiece, this song is, out of all their songs, their complete masterpiece. i literally can't believe how well-crafted and underrated this song is. 88 has more genre switches than "we're all to blame," and, toward the end, is even heavier than even "the bitter end." from the creepy piano bit toward the beginning to the absolute metal at the end, (aside from the "losing control" part) this song is an absolute gem. it's a shame that so few know about this amazing song.
overall, between the metal, the ballads, and even the great artwork, this album is an absolute 10, and is (i'll say it again), in my opinion, one of, if not THE best, ablums of the past decade. |
