| SWEENEY TODD 2007: A feature film adaptation of Sondheim's Sweeney Todd, jointly produced by Dreamworks and Warner Bros., was released on December 21, 2007. Tim Burton directed from a screenplay by John Logan. It stars Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd, Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett, Edward Sanders as Tobias, Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin, Sacha Baron Cohen as Signor Adolfo Pirelli, Laura Michelle Kelly as The Beggar Woman, and Timothy Spall as Beadle Bamford. It has all the lyrics, unlike the movie version (which was cut almost in half). This cast is amazing. Patti LuPone performs the hell out of this song! Also, this version has the company responding and demanding Mrs. Lovett for more pies, which was a touch that made the movie suffer when it was taken out. |

I had the privilege of seeing this production on Broadway in 2006 with Patti LuPone and Michael Cerveris and I was blown away. I quickly became my favorite show. This album was meant to be a highlights version of the show because of the low budget that they had. After the show was a hit the producer wanted to bring back the actors to record the rest of the songs but it was too late. This recording has the best vocals of all the Sweeney Todd recordings. The cast is only 10 actors who also perform as the orchestra. I recommend this album to any musical theatre fan. And it most definitely better than the movie version. |
