Hey what's up Johnzie,

Yep, I'm a letssingit.com newbie myself, but I just wanted to drop in and see if anyone was discussing this song, cuz it's awesome. I definately agree that it's a beautiful song, and I would also like to actually talk to and ask switchfoot in more depth about the lyrics. I can throw out what I think about 'em though....

Since the chorus mentions a "hole in the wall" and has "Soren's Song" in the title, then I'm assuming that it's based off of one of the ideas/theories of an old-school dutch christian philosopher/thelogian named Soren Kierkegaard. I think the general jist what Kierkegaard was saying is that if you were sitting in a dark room and couldnt see anything, then you would have no idea of knowing about your surroundings, or how you are supposed to react or think to the situation, but if there was a hole in the wall, then all of the sudden you have something to work with...you can judge how far away from the wall you are my distancing the light coming in, you can sort of see what's behind the wall, you might be able to assume what kind of room you're in, and everything else - and that can be interpretted in a lot of ways, but I think basically the point is that we live in this world, and how we live is determined by what we see around us, because it's all we know. If we were born with nobody around us, we wouldnt know what to think of ourselves or of the world. But instead, our parents teach us by words and by actions how to think and how to act...and later in life that might be changed by a different influence that we might hear or see, but we might not have come up with that idea to live that way had we not been exposed to it in the first place. It's kinda confusing, and Kierkegaard is hard to read, but it's really amazing to see a Christian band throwing out some thoughts of a timeless theologian, or quotes from Augustine - nobody does that - I love it!!!!

But yeah, so putting that into the context of the song, I think Switchfoot is talking about the struggle of following, serving, and believing in God when so many influences that surround us everyday try to contradict this... I think the first verse is basically saying 'I feel so alone because I'm a believer in this world and I'm even a mockery (a sinner) at that, but all I can hold on to and hope for is that God will draw me back to himself and take me over amidst me trying to live for myself.' Then the chorus - sooner or later you'll realize that you're living the way you are because it's what the world, or this person, or that person is expecting of you - that we're living based on the perspectives that we have rather than by the all-encompassing truth that only God can see/show us. Then the 2nd verse is in a way (I think) saying 'we are condemned to be free, free to do what we want (and that can sometimes get us in trouble), but that ultimately, the only freedom we have is in god and what God does for us, or in us, or to us - I'm asking and praying that God might send His Spirit on me in this dark world that I might believe and that Jesus might be the standard by which I live.' Then the altered chorus saying sooner or later other people will see that they're living how they are because of worldly influences, and you'll see how huge and majestic God is compared to how small and pointless we are (Psalm 46 -- He lifts his voice, the earth melts). Then the last part, he gave away ALL of himself to God, that he might continually lower his view of himself, and continually raise his view and praise of God...that only by God's will can he give his life to Him, and have dreams of making himself nothing(ie, shrinking) in comparison to God...because he will be seeing who God really is and will see His glory more apparent...

Deep deep song, in my opinion, but I looooove it. I think of all Christian bands out there right now, I believe that Switchfoot definately has the best lyrics of all of them. But that's my 2 cents anybody else have any thoughts?

i love this song it is awesome.

your insight on the song above is great! i knew it was inspired by a philosopher, but i didn't know what concept.

but i knew that this album was a time when Jon was really feeling the "pressures of excellence" (check out their miniwebsite for this album @ www.switchfoot.com, Tim explains it there) and a lot of songs were a direct reflection of that (i.e. - only hope, let that be enough). i don't know if sooner or later is also, but i always interpreted it as a song of desperation from those pressures.

Hey, I appreciate it!

Good call on your part too - good find on their website. I could definately feel that they were pressured in some way by hearing "Only Hope" and "Let That Be Enough" - you could sense it as a desperation cry...humility at it's finest. I love those songs too...But yeah, pressures of excellence - that defiantely makes sense.

Wow. I mean WOW. Barnabus82284 your really smart. I knew the song was about Soren, but I certainly didn't know ALL that. You must really do your research. You must get strait A's in all your classes. I think that's what Jon was trying to say. Yeah I'd love to meet Jon and ask about where he got the inspiration for his writing.

"Sooner of later we all have to deal with the frightening reality that there is much that is wrong in the world. But look! There is the doorway that leads to life more abundantly. Alas, our pride is much too large to fit in this other world. The choice which underlies every choice is this; will I live in God's kingdom or on my side of the wall? Kierkegaard emphasized that a relationship with an all powerful God is to be taken very seriously. This is Soren's song... These are his thoughts as best as I understand them."

They're pretty deep lyrics. I'm such a big fan of Switchfoot now. Not only because of their music but also because of the messages they're trying to sing in the songs and yes I am a Christian.
