| Taking Back Sunday is back with a third album, after two albums that, in my opinion, were both perfect. I was expecting the third record to be equally perfect, but there were some changes. What Louder Now shows you when you first hit play is a mix between the classic TBS and the new more instrument-wise TBS. I'll explain the album, song by song:
1. What's It Feel Like To Be A Ghost?
When you hear the main riff in the very beginning of the song, you'll be convinced to listen to the rest of the song closely. A typic palm-muted verse with a nice melody, when the chorus arrives, you'll notice the major difference that TBS has made with this album. The lyrics in the chorus constantly repeat "What's It Feel Like To Be A Ghost?", any Taking Back Sunday fan would wonder what this is about? Taking Back Sunday has never done this. Repeating the song tittle in the song is something a lot of bands do and it gets annoying, even though along the way you'll still find the song catchy. This personally made me think that this album is just not TBS, or at least, not the one I know. The good thing about the song, is the silent mellow bridge wich makes the song very attractive and makes you like the whole song despite what I mentioned before. And again, kudos on the guitar riff, TBS.
2. Liar (It Takes One To Know One)
Here's one of my favorite, actually. Though it still has stuff I don't like. It starts with a nice drum progression, along with bass, all this followed by a catchy strummed guitar riff. You'll fall in love with the verse right away, perfectly written and the second guitar makes it even better. The pre-chorus shows some very good lyrics and an awesome catchy melody, finally in the chorus, we come up with the same problem, they repeat "Liar" over and over, but this won't matter really, this song, along with some others I'll mention later, make it alright that they repeat the song title in the song. In the end of the song Fred proves my point by even singing "Liar, it takes one to know one". But like I said, you'll still love the song.
3. MakeDamnSure
MakeDamnSure, the very first impression of Louder Now for a lot of people. Adam's voice and Fred's odd but interesting guitar riff start the song together. A palm-muted guitar follows in the verse and you'll find some nice lyrics. What will make you interested in the song is the pre-chorus, a very high-pitched riff and Adam's high pitched voice. The chorus shows poor lyrical ideas but the rest of the song makes you accept it. Finally in the bridge they mention "I'm gonna Make Damn Sure" proving my point again. But you'll end up liking the song, specially when they start singing "No you won't ever get too far from me..."
4. Up Against (Blackout)
Now here, they repeat "Up Against" a thousand times, and "Blackout” too sometimes but, it's totally acceptable. The guitar in the begining is very good and the song is perfectly made, the chorus wich they repeat all over the song is repetitive but you won't get tired of it. This song convinces you that TBS has grown musically, it shows they wanna make good use of the guitar specially, bass and drums in this album. This song also introduces you to Fred using natural harmonics on the guitar, and well, he knows how to use them.
5. My Blue Heaven
Here, the song you'll fall in love with. As I mentioned before, natural harmonics are used in this album, and they're in the intro to this song, making a very good melodic riff. Eventhough they mention the title "My Blue Heaven" in the second verse, you'll find no problem at all with the song. The fact that they repeat the song tittles in the songs becomes less important as the album goes (This until you run into "Miami") This song is personally one of my favorites, a mellow verse and a powerfull melodic chorus, you'll be convinced about loving the song when the bridge comes up, it's just a perfect song, you'll know it when the strings (Perfectly used in the previous albums) appear in the song, making it 100% the song you want it to be. All this and Fred softly singing "Am I coming?" make the song just inspiring, I could go on but I'll stop now.
6. Twenty-Twenty Surgery
Here's the song I first liked out of the album. Yes yes, they repeat the song tittle on the song a lot here too, but believe you me, it won't matter. Here you'll find the best lyrics, the song message is pretty clear and easy to get. The chorus is just as catchy as TBS can get, the verses are good, and we get a perfect old-fashioned bridge. We find natural harmonics here too and a nice guitar intro. This song, just like My Blue Heaven, will be an affair you'll keep on repeat. One of the best things of the song: "You're so sensitive, I am a machine" wich Adam sings in the end, just amazing.
7. Spin
Remember The Union from Where You Want To Be? This is something very alike. Again, natural harmonics in the intro, followed by a fast Fred-style guitar riff, this song will convince you that Fred Mascherino wanted to make the guitar better in this album. A repetitive chorus but just like in "Up Against (Blackout)" you won't get tired of it. This song shows TBS at their best. They mention "Spin" somewhere in the back-up vocals in the end of the song, but it's hard hard to notice, at least to me.
8. Divine Intervention
Here's the slowest, very mellow song in the album. Some very good lyrics, nice percussion and attractive keys in the background. Adam sings "So if you're calling me out,
Then count me out." in the end of the chorus, wich reminds me a lot of the end of the chorus in Brand New's "The Boy Who Blocked His Own Shot" that goes "Glad that you can forgive, only hoping as time goes you can forget". And also, the first song in the album that doesn't mention the tittle.
9. Miami
In this song you'll find: An intro wich only features dead notes in the guitar and drums (wich may sound boring at first but you'll end up liking it), a very good guitar solo, some very good lyrics in the verses and bridge and a very poor chorus. This chorus repeats over and over and over the word Miami, what's this about? Is this creativity? I think not. Avoiding the chorus, you'll still pretty much like this song because of the parts that are worth it.
10. Error: Operator
Here, a re-worked version of the song "Error Operator" found in the Fantastic Four soundtrack. I think this song is one of Taking Back Sunday's best achievements musically and intrumentally, the guitars, the drums and the bass in this song, they all have important parts, not one of the instruments is left out. The song is about the Fantastic Four movie, to be specific, about Mr. Fantastic. If you see the movie and listen to the lyrics you'l know it right away. The Fantastic Four version of this song is somewhat more natural than this one, and it features some lyrics that they shouldn've left out for this version wich is very 'digitalized'. The Louder Now version has some arrangements that are worth it though.
11. I'll Let You Live
Some good lyrics here and there, and the instruments are alright. A very dark song. This song kind of says that the album is tired and it's ending, it features some catchy tunes though. With that I've said it all.
To conclude, I say, will find a different TBS, this specially because of the song tittles issue, but also more instrument-wise. Another way I like to describe it is "Raw", from a certain point of view, the album sounds like a long nicely recorded rehearsal, excepting "Error: Operator".
Louder Now is a good album despite the changes, I miss the old TBS as well as a lot of people. I think the past two albums are better though, speacially lyrically, and the songs were just better, even if the intruments were much more simple. But in the end this album brings good music, it's worth to have. | 07-09-2006 09:41 Cute_Tragedy10 | 28 posts
