Song lyrics
Two sides twist and then collide;
You're calling off the guards. ( Am I coming? )
I'm coming through. ( Am I coming? )
Adulteress conditioned to a spin cycled submission.
You know, sometimes it just feels better to give in.
( Sometimes, it just feels better to give in. )

And it's all too familiar,
And it happens all the time.
All the cards begin to stack up,
Twisting heartache into fine,
Little pieces that avoid an awful crime,
But it's you I can't deny.
(You I can't deny. )

Dull heat rises from the sheets.
I'm both a patient boy,
Well, and a jealous man. ( Am I coming? )
But double standardized suspicion,
Is remedied, oh, my blue heaven,
Sometimes, it just feels better to give in.
( Sometimes, it just feels better to give in. )

And it's all too familiar,
And it happens all the time.
All the cards begin to stack up,
Twisting heartache into fine,
Little pieces that avoid an awful crime,
But it's you I can't deny.
( You I can't deny. )

We swing and we sway,
As this tiny voice in,
My head starts to sing,
"You're safe, child, you are safe."
( "You're safe, child, you are safe." )
"You're safe, child, you are safe."

We swing and we sway,
As this tiny voice in,
My head starts to sing,
"You're safe, child, you are safe. "
"You're safe, child, you are .."

Safe. ( Safe.) Safe. ( Safe. )
You are safe.

We swing and we sway,
As this tiny voice in,
My head starts to sing,
"You're safe, child, you are safe." ( Am I coming? )
"You're safe, child, you are safe. "( Am I -- )
Coming through?

Is this all too familiar?
Does it happen all the time?
I'm just asking you to hear me.
Could you please, just once, just hear me?
More than anything you wanted to be right.
Still it's you, you, it's you I can't deny.
( You I can't deny. )
It's you I can't deny.

At the end of the song when it says "Does it happen all the time?" gives me shivers, I don't even know why, but it's the way he sings it.

I love it.

The best song on Louder Now in my opinion. Its the first one I go too, Liar (It Takes One to know One) is the second best. But really the whole album is freaking great, I love Taking Back Sunday. They're one of the few bands that has had three albums in a row all be very good, and not crap. I love TBS, keep up the good work!

ok. so this is for the person that asked what this song is about.
i was actually thinking about that one night while i was trying to fall asleep, so i started to analyze this song.

i think it's about sex, point blankly. like, about how a girl gave it up to one guy so easily, but she's not willing to give it up to him.

'and it's all too familiar and it happens all the time' - they're in the situation where they can have sex a lot, but she never does, so he's used to it.

'i'm both a patient boy and a jealous man' - he's trying to be patient with her because he does want to wait for the right moment, but he's also jealous at the same time because she gave it up to someone else.

'sometimes it just feels better to give in' - he's telling her that she should give in to her real feelings for him.

'we swing and we sway as this tiny voice in my head starts to sing youre safe child you are safe' - she finally gives in to him and his conscience is telling him that this is right and he's with his soulmate.

haha ok. i can't remember if i thought of anything else that night. just apply this meaning to the other verses in the song and see if it makes sense to what he's singing. i'm not even sure if i'm right; i doubt it. that's my perspective though. as people have said before, when taking back sunday writes a song, there's usualy multiple meanings and people see them differently.
i hope this helped a little though! and let me know if anyone agrees with this or has a different opinion.

The part in MBH:

"And it's all too familiar and it happens all the time.
All the cards begin to stack up,
twisting heartache into fine little pieces that avoid an awful crime.
But it's you I can't deny."

was taken from Breaking Pangaea's song "Wedding Dress"
((Breaking Pangaea is Fred's old band))

I think that TBS version of those lyrics is 10 times better than what Breaking Pangaea had ... iderno just thought i'd share that.

i was talking to someone who hates this song as well as Divine Intervention, because they're too slow and "boring" which i think is absolutely wrong. this song is amazing. i love when it gets really quiet, and all that's being sung is "we swing and we sway..." and at the end it breaks back into the louder music. genius.

Tell All Your Friends is still one of my favorite albums of all time. Where You Want To Be is alright, but i've never been able to get into it. Louder Now is by far my favorite album to date.

With all due respect for roxyangelrox… the song has little if not any reference towards sex (in fact… the only reference to sex I’ve found in the album is in Liar “got 26 days to work with” (which identifies the number of days he has to have sex with her during the month (periods are situated every 26-28 days)))…. TBS made this song to be much deeper than any physical aspect…

Here is the intended meaning My Blue Heaven possesses… and trust me when I say I didn’t just think about it last night….

The song is basically about a couple in which both sides are filled up with pride… I am currently living this song and that is why I identified with it so much…

“two sides twist and then collide” TBS shows how two simple sides can engage in a huge conflict just like that… since both sides have pride… every small little argument turns into a World War because none of them are willing to lose the fight…
“sometimes it just feels better to give in” this along with some other lines preceding it state how even though you are right… it sometimes feels better to let the other side take all glory…. sometimes because you’d like to see the other person happy… or sometimes because you just want to stop fighting…
“and it’s all too familiar, and it happens all the time, all the cards begin to stack up, twisting heartache into fine” this is very direct… states how both sides are used to how little problems turn into big fights and how everything is kind of growing into larger and larger conflicts making all other problems simple and harmless compared to this new one…
“little pieces all avoid an awful crime” somewhat direct… even though these little fights turn into huge deals…they don’t mean the relationship is going to end….
“it’s you I can’t deny” pretty direct… after everything is said and done… she’ll always be right…
“both a patient boy, and a jealous man” says that the guy will hear what she has to say but inside he is burning up to say his side of the story…
“we swing and we sway as this tiny voice in my head starts to sing ‘you’re safe child you are safe’”… basically says… even though we are in conflict all the time, we know we are safe and our relationship is not going to end because of one tiny little fight…

And the best stanza which proves my meaning
“I’m just asking you to hear me, could you please just once just hear me, more than anything you wanted to be right, still it’s you I can’t deny”…VERY direct… he’s begging for a chance to say his side but he knows it means everything to her to be right… so he’ll forfeit his opinion for her…

Sorry for making it so long… but I really wanted to prove my point…

In addition to the interpretation of the previous passage, I'd also like to add some of my own thoughts.

"adulturous condition to a spin-cycle in submission, you know sometimes it just feels better to give in"

I think that sounds an awful lot like someone was cheating in the relationship, which could be what the fight was about. "giving in" could be about either giving into temptation, or about giving in to the other person's argument, or both.

also, "double-standardized suspicion is remedied" sounds like someone was either cheating or flirting and the other person got jealous, but they worked it out maybe?

just my ideas.

ok so for the two or three who are talking about what this song means, i think there are many ways you could look at it. i think the whole fights in relationships makes alot of sense but i think the sexual mataphors could work too. honestly when i first heard the song, i thought it was about sex too, because if it was about a relationship then why would he say "Dull heat rises from the sheets."? i think hes referencing to having sex there because well, we all know that most of us have sex in bed, with sheets! lol im just giving my opinion, although all of yours seem to make sense as well.

I love this song because there is just so much emotion throughout the whole song... It's one of their best...

For the meaning I have been thinking about it for a while now and I was going on the aspect of cheating like Allie just added... And after I read what Roxy wrote I was in total agreement as well... So I believe they are both right though I don't think its totally cheating because thats not a little problem... Flirting would be a more correct term...

mauhza you have some good analysis, but lyrics can always have more than the meaning you think it has, so stop behaving like a pretentious know-it-all. Please.

making a note on what roxyangelrox and mauhza have said, im just trying to give everyone a bit of clarification. you guys(or chicks) can disagree on the meaning of a song, but there is no fixed meaning. a song, like a poem or a painting has a meaning and interpretation individual to every person who reads/hears/views it. thats why almost everyone can relate to art(music included) because its designed to be that way
but all aside , awesome song, one of my favorite tbs songs ever.
tbs have a funny chubby rhythm guitarist.
