| Song lyrics |
I read the news today oh boy
About a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad
Well I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed
A crowd of people stood and stared
They'd seen his face before
Nobody was really sure if he was from the House of Lords.
I saw a film today oh boy
The English Army had just won the war
A crowd of people turned away
But I just had to look
Having read the book, I'd love to turn you on...
Woke up, fell out of bed,
Dragged a comb across my head
Found my way downstairs and drank a cup,
And looking up I noticed I was late.
Found my coat and grabbed my hat
Made the bus in seconds flat
Found my way upstairs and had a smoke,
and Somebody spoke and I went into a dream
I read the news today oh boy
Four thousand holes in Blackburn, Lancashire
And though the holes were rather small
They had to count them all
Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall.
I'd love to turn you on.

It's really one of the best songs that's ever been made! The way John sings the words and Paul plays the bass, it all floats together and sounds magical. And I heard something beautiful about the meaning of the song: "Life is a dream and as dreamers we have the chance to make life good." This song really feels like a weird, beautiful dream. | 05-10-2004 11:25 baaigones | 3,172 posts

A masterpiece! I've heard few other songs where the music itself (in combination with the lyrics) contributes so much to the meaning of the piece. And I get thrills when I hear the beginning and ending notes. Kudos to John & Paul! | 13-10-2004 03:18 D_ree | 11 posts

If you wait a while after the singing and instruments stop, you can hear some more words--it might be another "Paul is Dead" clue, but I can't understand what they're saying...
I love this song, though! | 08-05-2005 18:06 Chrome | 81 posts

A perfect end of the perfect album. I, like many other, thinks that Srg. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band is the best Album ever created. Me and my dad thought about this a while and....well, it is just perfect. For an example: just listen how they made sure that "Srg. peppers Lonely Heart Club Band"#(Reprise)#ended just perfectly to make space to "A day in the life". Just amazing, I couldn't find a place to describe the entire album, so this is the closest I can come, I feel as happy I can be to be one (of oh so many) people who had the chance to listen to the record wich had this song in it. | 15-02-2006 21:38 Paoie | 14 posts

This i wonderful! I can't top cry when I lissen to it. It's so sad! Ofcourse it is about Paul's death. Paul is dead. I thought that everyone know that by know. Um, now when he even show his real eye colur. He has no shame! "Paul is dead, is dead. Paul is dead", That's what the voice is saying in the song. I love the way that John putts his feeling's about paul's death in the song. (Thank you Billy shears. .) | 14-08-2006 16:50 mauvis | 1 posts

its NOT about paul dying.
John said this specifically.
and it was written before the whole hoax came up;
1967, and the rumours started 1969.
And Paul isn't dead.
I hate that stupid rumour. | 08-03-2007 17:05 Neza | 8 posts
| Lennons voice gives me shivers down my spine, just like it does in Imagine and In my life. Probably The Beatles best song and one of the greatest ever i think. | 12-03-2007 13:53 poisonbrain |

| I can't believe people still hold onto that. No, scratch that, I can't believe they bought it in the first place. Honestly. I've just spent the last five minutes laughing about this.
One of the best songs ever in my opinion. I love the absolute noise they create with the orchestra, it breaks off the song in a brilliant way. | 21-04-2007 01:14 MrSpoon | 2 posts

You don't need someone else to tell you what the lyrics mean, it's what they mean to you. Poems and song lyrics can have way more than just one meaning.
And the Paul is dead conspiracy is just that, a conspiracy. What are the chances that they could find a person who looks just like him, plays bass just as good as him, has the exact same sounding voice, and has the ability to write masterpieces like Hey Jude and Yesterday, (and many others)?
And this song is killer. Not their best, but that's only because the Beatles rule and made many songs even better. | 09-05-2007 00:14 Qtip66 | 140 posts
