| Song lyrics |
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Eleanor Rigby, picks up the rice
in the church where a wedding has been
Lives in a dream
Waits at the window, wearing the face
that she keeps in a jar by the door
Who is it for
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
Father McKenzie, writing the words
of a sermon that no one will hear
No one comes near
Look at him working, darning his socks
in the night when there's nobody there
What does he care
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Ah, look at all the lonely people
Eleanor Rigby, died in the church
and was buried along with her name
Nobody came
Father McKenzie, wiping the dirt
from his hands as he walks from the grave
No one was saved
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?

I am doing an independent study for college and this song is part of my study. Look at these lyrics snd respond however you see fit
All the lonely people
Where do they all come from?
All the lonely people
Where do they all belong?
You can think of these people or think of times when you feel lonely for inspiration. I am seeking reactions, stories, or whatever else comes to mind that pertains to this question. If you would potentially like to be included in my project email PoisonIvy77R@yahoo.com and leave a response. Thanks.

| I saw some discussion on this song at the Penny Lane discussion. Anyway, I just want to make something clear: Paul McCartney wrote Eleanor Rigby, so it was he who made the name up and he who didn't want to use his father's name and therefore changed it to father McKenzie.. John, on the other hand, thought it would be rather funny.
And there is a grave with Rigby's name on it in Liverpool, and the Quarrymen (or at least some of the former Beatles anyway) actually sang in the church where the gravestone is. So it's a little spooky, but Paul claims it has nothing to do with the song. | 07-10-2004 11:47 J_mac | 48 posts

| ive heard a couple of interpretations of this song. this is the one which i think makes the most sense.
one(which i believe) claims that it is just about two lonely people, who never really get to know each other, but if they had they could be happy, the deeper meaning is something along the lines of all the other people in the world we dont know, but if we did we could be more happy, etc... also this song seems to have a cold, accusing tone, as in 'why arent we helping others? they need it, they are lonely'.

I was never a big Beatles fan, I couldn't attach myself to their music, then I heard this song. This song made me realise just how much influence the Beatles have on music today, I could hear so many of my generation's songs in "Eleanor Rigby". Pure simple genious. | 11-11-2004 08:32 Germinator | 21 posts

This is probably my favourite Beatle song. I was always a big fan of the band but when I thought "The Beatles" I thought of songs like "Twist and Shout","I Want To Hold Your Hand", "Penny Lane" all happy songs that really don't have a meaning to them. But Eleanor Rigby is such an amazing song. The lyrics are so true even though this song was written in the sixties every word is as true today as it was then. | 16-11-2004 23:22 Shinra | 50 posts
