Song lyrics
In Penny Lane there is a barber showing photographs
of every head he's had the pleasure to have known.
And all the people that come and go
Stop and say hello.

On the corner is a banker with a motorcar,
and little children laugh at him behind his back.
And the banker never wears a mac
In the pouring rain, very strange.

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue suburban skies
I sit, and meanwhile back

In penny Lane there is a fireman with an hourglass
And in his pocket is a portrait of the Queen.
He likes to keep his fire engine clean,
It's a clean machine.

Penny Lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
A four of fish and finger pies
In summer, meanwhile back

Behind the shelter in the middle of the roundabout
The pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray
And though she feels as if she's in a play
She is anyway.

In Penny Lane the barber shaves another customer,
We see the banker sitting waiting for a trim.
And then the fireman rushes in
From the pouring rain, very strange.

Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue suburban skies
I sit, and meanwhile back.
Penny lane is in my ears and in my eyes.
There beneath the blue suburban skies,
Penny Lane.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds... stands for LSD. Come on it was the 70's what do you expect. Ofcourse it's about drugs, it is so obvious!

Great Song!! I love the beatles...

And to all you who think the Beatles songs are about drugs they arnt.. Penny Lane is written about a street in London, Strawberry Fields Forever is about an orphanage that in England (They started a fund that kept it running up until a few months ago), Lucy in the sky with Diamonds is about a poster that John Lennon's son drew about a girl named Lucy in his class... The Beatles worte their songs when they were not high, The stuff they wrote when they were high came out crappy to them

This is one of the best Beatles songs.. But we were forced to sing it over and over again at school, so I got kind of tired of it. Still; It's a good song, no doubt!

An interesting and catchy song. The Beatles have some of the weirdest, good songs ever created.

Penny lane is in my ear
And in my eye

actally if you watch beatles anthology dvds it explains all that. Paul was actally nervous about taking LSD and didnt start until about five months after all the others had taking it. As for smoking weed they were all very much into that. On Sgt. Peppers John manily wrote all the so called acid music. Like strawberry fields and lucy in the sky with diamonds. (even tho the beatles say they are not drug related they have the sound of it) On the DVDs it says they didnt write much music when they were on drugs because it all ended up sounding bad. John was heavly into drugs right before he met Yoko often coming to the beatles and saying he was jesus christ. Anyone who is a big beatles fan should watch the antholgy DVDs. [offtopic]

"She feels as if she's in a play.. she is anyway". One of the most psychedelic lyrics by the Beatles.. Many think that Lennon was the experimental one, but McCartney was a lot more interested in that sort of thing, for instance avantgarde. John didn't even like it to begin with and only started when he met Yoko. Paul stood for most tracks on Pepper, which is considered the Beatles' most psychedelic record.

Anyway, Penny Lane is a great song! It always cheers me up because it really feels like the Beatles.

This song is good, but it's not one of my favorites, though. But The Beatles' "worst" are better than any other group's best anyway

Great lyrics, along with strawberry fields, this was sorta the launching pad into their later years.

i think i read in a book that was about songs and how writers came up w/ them that eleanor rigby was a real person, but john just saw her tombstone. and if i recall correctly they had a picture of the grave in england. but who knows if this is true b/c it wasn't substantiated by a beatle. i've also heard that it is another "clue" about paul's death, and it was going to be father mccartney not father mackenzie, but john didn't want to be too obvious.

dude..this is a cool song.. a bit disturbed . yes, but hey.. that the way some people like me are.. this is a very deep song with very meaningful lyrics that blends perfectly with the balance of the bass of the song beautifully. it truly reveals the true gift of the writer/s
perhaphs, i only have one question though : is eleanor rirby in fact that of what the men in this band claims her to be? just another figment in lennon's very active imagination, or is she perhaps a person a bit more of their aquantance, and perhaps a friend of the band?
but over all nice job love the song just try not to develop a cow over what rirby's real identity is.. who knows? maybe its beneath the pages of the anthology.. and i just havent found it yet?
