| Song lyrics |
In matching blue raincoats,
our shoes were our show boats
we kicked around.
From stairway to station
we made a sensation
with the get-about crowd.
And oh, what a bargain,
we’re two easy targets
for the old men at the off-tracks,
who’ve paid in palaver
and crumpled old dollars,
which we squirreled away
in our rat trap hotel by the freeway.
And we slept in Sundays.
Your parents were anxious,
your cool was contagious
at the old school.
You left without leaving
a note for your grieving
sweet mother, while
your brother was so cruel.
And here in the alleys
your spirits were rallied
as you learned quick to make a fast buck.
In bathrooms and barrooms,
on dumpsters and heirlooms,
we bit our tongues.
Sucked our lips into our lungs
'til we were falling.
Such was our calling.
And here in our hovel we fuse like a family,
but I will not mourn for you.
So take off your makeup
and pocket your pills away.
We’re kings among runaways
on the bus mall.
We’re down
on the bus mall.
Among all the urchins and old Chinese merchants
stood the old town,
we reigned at the pool hall
with one iron cue ball
and we never let the bastards get us down.
And we laughed off the quick tricks--
the old men with limp dicks--
on the colonnades of the waterfront park.
As 4 in the morning came on, cold and boring,
we huddled close
in the bus stop enclosure enfolding.
Our hands tightly holding.
But here in our hovel we fuse like a family,
but I will not mourn for you.
So take off your makeup
and pocket your pills away.
We’re kings among runaways
on the bus mall.
We’re down
on the bus mall.
We’re down
on the bus mall.
Down on the bus mall.
oh ooh oh

| On the Bus Mall is about prostitution. The girl runs away from home and doesn't leave a note. She quickly learns how to make a fast buck by selling herself to dirty men. In their hotel they are like a family. The way the narrator says "I would not mourn for you" suggests the possibility that this is the pimp figure, but I am unsure as to whether they are, or simply another prostitute.
It is clearly not a classic love song. The Decemberists don't do classic love songs. Duh. | 28-12-2007 16:23 ticket | 1 posts

In actuality, the song does not describe the relationship between a guy and a girl, but that of two male prostitutes. If it were to be merely a girl, as you suggested, what would be the functionality of the line 'We're two easy targets for the old men at the offtracks'.
The entire song is sung in a plural voice, meaning it cannot be merely 'a girl' doing all the action. Or a girl at all. | 04-06-2009 16:29 JasonGray | 18 posts

An epic song from a stellar group.
The two characters are, indeed, male prostitutes -- the narrator's associate also being a transvestite. The song takes place shortly after the death of his associate, as the narrator recounts the pair's adventures through the city, their makeshift "family life," and reckless drug addiction. The narrator acknowledges a bond, but refuses to mourn for his lost companion (denial being a token step in the grieving process).
As cinematic as a song can be -- not unlike most all of the Decemberists' concoctions. As a latent screenwriter, their music often dominates my thoughts. |
