Song lyrics
Here on these cliffs of Dover
So high you can't see over
And while your head is spinning
Hold tight, it's just beginning

You come from parents wanton
A childhood rough and rotten
I come from wealth and beauty
Untouched by work or duty

And oh, my love, my love
And oh, my love, my love
We both go down together

I found you, a tattooed tramp
A dirty daughter from the labour cans
I laid you down on the grass of a clearing
You wept but your soul was willing

And oh, my love, my love
And oh, my love, my love
We both go down together

And my parents will never consent to this love
But I hold your hand

Meet me on my vast veranda
My sweet, untouched Miranda
And while the seagulls are crying
We fall but our souls are flying

And oh, my love, my love
And oh, my love, my love
And oh, my love, oh my love
And oh, my love, my love
We both go down together

This song is indeed about rape. Maybe Rape isn't the best word for it, but the boy forces himself on the girl in ' the grassy clearing'. Most of the Decemberists songs about love end up with somebody getting hurt, or even dying, mostly in the album Picaresque. What happens afterwards may be fuzzy, she might have fallen in love with him afterwards and was WILLING to jump with him, or he might have just confused her, brought her up, and made her jump one way or another. I doubt Colin Meloy wrote this out to be a super happy song, because it just isn't his style. I'd have to say ' And while the seagulls are crying, we fall but our souls are flying" is the saddest, if you want to call it that, but it is still my favorite line in the song.

dflizzle- thank you for your explanation....even if it wasnt what was meant, id rather think of this song like that than rape. And i have to agree with you that it is too beautiful of a song to be about rape.....

Where do you guys get the rape part from? This song is about two lovers, one from a rich family and the other from a poor family. The guy takes the girls virginity and gets her pregnant and his rich parents won't stand for it so they jump off the cliffs of Dover. "You wept but your soul was willing," is about the guy taking the girls virginity, and i don't think that is very sad. "And while the seagulls are crying,
We fall but our souls are flying." Those are the saddest lines in the song.

the melody of this song alone gives away that its not a happy song about two "star crossed lovers" his tone seems to also indicate a bit of madness and contempt. however we can agree that this song is amazing.

I agree with the latter. This is not about a shared love. It's about a rich man who rapes a poor girl and concocts a fantasy in his head.

I agree that this is a fantastic song, but I'm gonna have to disagree on the interpretation. As I see it: this is a song about a rich kid, who more or less rapes a girl, is convinced they're in love, and is trying to convince her to commit suicide with him. It's beautiful, and dark as hell...

My favorite lines in the entire song. You can really understand the conflict going through the girl's mind and their whole star-crossed love. Awesome...
