Title : Hotel California
-----------------
On a dark desert highway,
cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas,
rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance,
I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
There she stood in the doorway
I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself
This could be Heaven or this could be Hell
Then she lit up a candle
and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor
I thought I heard them say
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the Hotel California
Any time of year
Any time of year
You can find it here
Her mind is Tiffany-twisted,
she got the Mercedes Benz
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys,
that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard,
sweet summer sweat
Some dance to remember,
some dance to forget
So I called up the Captain,
Please bring me my wine
He said, 'we haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine'
And still those voices are calling from far away
Wake you up in the middle of the night
Just to hear them say
Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely face
They're livin' it up at the Hotel California
What a nice surprise
What a nice surprise
Bring your alibis
Mirrors on the ceiling
The pink champagne on ice
And she said 'we are all just prisoners here, of our own device'
And in the master's chambers
They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives
But they just can't kill the beast
Last thing I remember, I was
Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
'Relax,' said the night man
We are programmed to receive
You can checkout any time you like
But you can never leave

| Ok, what this song means is that there is this guy in hell, but he just doesn't know it until the lady that brought him in tells. It's a great song, but It's the weirdest song I've ever heard. If you want the lyrics you can just look up William Hung's version of it, it's exactly what The Eagle's lyrics are. (I'm pretty sure, I listened to William Hung's version and it didn't sound exactly right.) These are just one of these artists that want you to find out the meaning by listening to the words, and not reading them. | 09-08-2004 13:41 rawkerNoNagal | 9,981 posts

what's this song really about anyway? | 23-08-2004 20:03 AntiQwerty4Life | 1 posts
| the hotel california wasnt actually a hotel at all...it was an old abondoned church that was adopted and turned into the first public satanic church...thats why the song says..."There she stood in the doorway; i heard the mission bell. And i was thinking to myself "this could be heaven or this could be hell"...he was in a church but it was converted stanic...when u walked in the door there was a carpet of jesus' face to wipe your feet on...if u listen to the song it mentions many times in there of people selling their souls to get something (ie: luxury, lust, or fame)...so thats the real meaning...kinda wierd, but all very true | 26-08-2004 06:43 whongho | 483 posts

i thought i would say something about what the song really means. the truth is that nobody truly knows wha it means....there are many theories, but nobody can say if one is true or not, but here are some of the theories:
1) its a real hotel and the song is a hard look at the hotel industry which is plagued by guests who "check out any time they like, but then never leave"
2) the hotel california is a mental hospital
3) like the guy said earlier, its about satanism
4) its about a drug addiction..." you can check out any time you like but you can never leave." also, warm smell of colitas......colita is actually the tip of a marijuana leaf...the most potent part. this theory was actually stated by one of the coauthors.
5) it about the dangers of living in southern california in the 1970s
6) and here is my most favorite one.....a man from vancouver has said...." there was a fireworks factory just three blocks from the hotel california....and it blew up. a big tragedy. one of the workers was named Wurn Snell and he was from the town of Colitas in Greece. One of the workers who escaped the explosion talk to another guy......his name was don and don asked what the guy saw. the worker replied, "Wurn Snell of Colitas......rising up through the ari."
but anywa, in all seriousness, personally i believe the drug theory......colitas has to do with drugs and the whole song doesnt make sense and makes you feel like youre in a dream....and for those of you who have taken drugs no what i mean. while i will say the satanic thing sounds kind of cool, it just doesnt make since to me, so im going to go with the drug thing. but regardless of what it means, its an awesome song!! | 02-12-2004 14:06 purschka | 1 posts
| I don't exactly know what this song is about but there is one bit that reminds me of William Golding's novel "Lord of the Flies":
„in the master’s chambers
they gathered for the feast
they stab it with they steely knives
but they just can’t kill the beast“
In the novel the guys have this feast where they are dancing ecstatically around a fire and in the end kill one of their fellows, Simon. Before they had al beenl afraid of a "beast" that probably didn't exist at all. It was Simon who, before his death, had claimed: "Maybe the beast is inside us" and therefore they actually couldn't kill it.
Does anybody know if that's an intended conncetion between the novel and the song?
