I am a member of mickjagger.com and we have discussions about this kind of stuff and we came up with a few different meanings: Communism: 'I see a red door and want it painted black' The death of a loved one: 'I see a line of cars and they're all painted black, With flowers, and my love, both never to come back' There has also been stories of racism too. Because Decca made a typing mistake with the comma in the tile of the song, many assumed that the song was ill-mannered towards black people. IMO, I don't really know what it's about. I just listen to the Sitar!
