The Unbelievable Truth - Biography

The members of Oxford, England's Unbelievable Truth don't pay much attention to the Brit-pop music trends around them. Instead, the trio -- comprising lead vocalist/guitarist Andy Yorke (younger brother of Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke), bassist Jason Moulster and drummer/keyboardist Nigel Powell -- wrap dense sonic layers around emotionally charged lyrics, producing a sort of British emo-rock, oddly reminiscent of the Cure.

The three-piece came together in 1993 after Yorke, a Russian language major, returned from an extended trip to Russia and looked up his old high school friends, Powell and Moulster to form a band. Naming themselves after the Hal Hartley film, The Unbelievable Truth, they began playing gigs in and around Oxford. Propelled by that city's burgeoning music scene, the group was soon noticed by Virgin Records who signed them for the release of their debut, Almost Here, in 1998. The CD was followed by a U.S. tour opening for Tori Amos.
