Crooner & actor of Hollywood's golden age, Tony Martin died on Friday in Los Angeles. He was 98. The news has been told by Beverly Scott, a close source of the actor's. Tony Martin made his film debut with Fred Astaire & Ginger Rogers in the musical film "Follow The Fleet" (1936). A silver screen star during the 40's & 50's, Tony Martin played in 25 films & most of them were musicals. He had several partners in comedies : Rita Hayworth in "Music In My Heart" (1940), James Stewart in "Ziegfeld Girl" (1941) & Judy Garland in "Till The Clouds Roll By" (1946). He also played with Marilyn Monroe in "Clash By Night" (1952) & most of all, Cyd Charisse. They married in 1948. The couple, who had a son, stayed together until the dancer's death in 2008. A baritone with a sweet voice, Tony Martin wasn't the rival of Frank Sinatra & Bing Crosby. After WWII, he performed songs like "I Get Ideas", "Begin The Biguine" & "There's No Tomorrow". His hit "To Each His Own" sold 1 million copies. In 1982, Tony Martin made his last appearance in the film "Dear Mr. Wonderful", with Joe Pesci.
