| Song lyrics |
listen to the tales and romanticise
how we follow the path of the hero
boast about the day when the rivers overrun
how we rised to the height of our halo
listen to the tales as we all rationalise
our way into the arms of the savior
fading all the trials and the tribulations
none of us have actually been there
not like you
ignorant fibbers in the congregation
gather around spewing sympathy
spare me
none of them can even hold a candle up to you
blinded by choices hippocrites won't seek
but nothing but the collective judas'
who could deny you were the one who would have made it
you'll have a piece of the divine
this little light of mine
the gift you passed onto me
im going to let it shine
to guide you safely on your way
your way home
what are they going to do when the lights go down
without you to guide them home to zion
what are they going to do when the river is overrun
other than tremble incessantly
high as a wave but i'll rise on up on the ground
you are a light, and a wave, that they will only read about
i only pray, heaven knows when to lift you out
ten thousand days in the fire is long enough
you're going home
you're the only one who can hold your head up high
shake your fist at the gates saying:
i have come home now
fetch me the spirit
the son, and the father
tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
it's time now, my time now
give me my, give me my, wings
give me my
give me my wings
you are a light, a wave
that they will only read about
set as i am in my ways and my arrogance
burden of truth tossed upon non-believers
you were my witness
my eyes, my evidence
judith marie, unconditional one
daylight dims
leaving cold flouresence
difficult to see you in this light
please forgive this bold suggestion
should you see your maker's face tonight
look em in the eye
look em in the eye, and tell them
i never lived a lie, never took a life
but surely saved one, hallelujah
it's time for you to bring me home

This entire album has to be their best work ever, which is saying a lot considering Lateralus, Aenima and Salival's artistic greatness. But this album, it's just so... Maynard's voice is bone-chilling, hypnotic, and soothing all at the same time. Danny's drumming exceeds anything any living drummer besides him can conceive. Justin and Adam's guitar and bass playing are a match made in heaven.
Anyhow, as for the song itself, I just heard it today and I've been totally lost in this song along with Jambi, Wings For Marie (Part 1), Right In Two... ah fuck, the entire album! lol | 26-04-2006 08:41 Micola | 89 posts

| dont make comments like that about Danny. Lateralus is his best album so far. And, i have this entire album.
Go find some Vinnie Colauita, or Steve Gadd, or Dave Weckl...
Danny, while my favourite drummer, IS NOT teh most skilled.
Having said that, i like the new album but am pretty disaappointed as a follow up to Lateralus...

This almost sounds like a "goodbye" song. I hope this isn't one of those last album kinda things... | 28-04-2006 15:18 Aesma_Daeva | 1 posts
| Maybe because it is a "goodbye" song??? It's part 2 of the song "Wings For Marie"... You know.. As in Judith MARIE Keenan.. His mother...
And yes, the CD is quite disappointing... It wasn't worth waiting 5 years for.. Not to mention the lyrics... "Lemon juice up in your eye" ...Right... Pretty much only this song is good on the CD. | 06-05-2006 10:56 sSloth | 3 posts

My god you are stupid. The lyrics are not the only thing about Tool. The lyrics are only 1/4 of the whole band. Don't go straight to the lyrics, listen to the instrumental talent first. | 08-05-2006 02:26 in_my_nothing_E | 5 posts
| Oh i love it i love it. Very sad song definatley about his mom but hard to inturpret. Instrumentals are wonderful. Maynard really did great with this cd...And whoever said it wasnt worth the wait and that they are dissapointed doesnt deserve to even be a fan! This cd is amazing!!!!!!!! | 08-05-2006 20:50 halo_zero | 1 posts

im not going to go so far as to say 10,000 days (the album) is dissappointing, because looking at the album in it's artistic entirety, it's not, it's a freakin awesome cd, and one of my favorites by tool. however, i would have to say that the lyrics of tool's songs have always been their strongest point -- in my eyes anyway. just the lyrical depth of lateralus and ænima left a lot for 10,000 days to live up to, and -- lyrically -- i do not think it did that. however, don't freak out on me yet, all other elements of the cd make up for that fact. regardless, look at the very deep songs of tool's... song's like third eye, parabol(a), reflection, lateralus, 46 & 2, just to name a few. the sheer intelectual power that these songs hold, along with the intrumental aesthetics, does cast a very large shadow on 10,000 days. that said, i must admit that i have not yet [personally] fully analyzed every song on the album in their entirety. for example, i have a gut feeling that rosetta stoned is deeper than what it appears on the surface. concerning this song, 10,000 days (wings part 2), in specific, it is my favorite song (alongside rosetta stoned) on the cd. the meaning of the song has already been addressed and isn't that hard to figure out, so i'll skip all that. it's good let's hope tool's next cd doesn't take 5 years to come out tho... | 20-05-2006 07:13 jackalclone1 | 65 posts
| also, if anyone could clear this up for me, i would very much appreciate it. i am uneducated on maynard's mother's (judith) background, however, 10,000 days seems to imply (actually to me it's more of an explicit statment) that she went to hell:
i only pray, heaven knows when to lift you out
ten thousand days in the fire is long enough
you're going home
you're the only one who can hold your head up high
shake your fist at the gates saying:
"i have come home now
fetch me the spirit
the son, and the father
tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
it's time now, my time now
give me my, give me my, wings"
that chunk of lyrics clearly states that judith is currently burning in the fires of hell, and the overall point of the song seems to address the fact that she clearly does not belong there. furthermore, that specific chunk of lyrics seems to be stating that judith should [rightfully] make her way to the gates of heaven and declare in front of st. peter that she has earned her halo and wings, vis a vis an angel.
so, if i am in fact interpreting this correctly, the question arises: what exactly did judith do to be sent to hell, or moreover, why does maynard believe that she is actually in hell? im asking because im not sure and am quite curious. | 21-05-2006 23:50 MX176Railer | 2 posts

Judith Marie (Maynards mother) was paralyzed for 27 years ( 10,000 days) even though she was put through such hell she still kept her faith. This song is about her getting her wings.. Being accepted to heaven. Its unbelieavably moving.
Wings for marie part 1
"... It's time for us to let you go"
10, 000 days.
" ... Your going home"
Now with your newlyfound understanding of the song... Go read all of the lyrics of Part 1 and 10,000 days and try to keep a dry eye. | 21-05-2006 23:57 MX176Railer | 2 posts
| Oh yes... and another thing you tool fans might....sorry, WILL EFFIN LOVE.
Viginti tres means 23 latin. 23 is the number for synchronizing.... Hmmm
The running time for wings for marie plus the time for viginti tres is exactly 11:13....
10,000 days exact run time is 11:13 as well...
Take viginti tres and wings for marie and put them on a playlist on your computer and set them to play in that order... ( viginti then wings)
find a way to play 10,000 days at the same time these two are playing and it comes together double P style. Perfectly and Purposely lol. Make sure its perfectly on time and you will effin love it! Just more of TooLs brilliance. | 29-05-2006 09:27 RandomEndeavor | 2 posts

*clears throat* I'm going to ignore the previous comments, mainly because I don't enjoy seeing these things turn into knock-down-omg!1212 I can't believe you said that!!!1! fights.
I'm not an expert when it comes to describing music. I don't know the proper terms. I can’t babble on about awesome riffs and good rhythm, but my opinion on this song - on this album, revolves around the emotion it caused to boil to the surface, so it doesn’t matter.
This song especially caused me to pull over on the side of the road so I could figure out where the hell the "repeat" button was on my cd player.
Magical, simply magical. And knowing some of Maynard's history (not the exacts, but just enough that I had goose bumps even while listening), made it even more intense.
Honestly, I was skeptical to discover Tool wasn't planning on handing us lyrics that were complicated, bordering on confusing in this album, but after listening to this song, I'm grateful for the route they decided to take. In its simplicity, we’re better able to understand, I think.
That's a peice of his life, folks.
I, for one, appreciate it. | 31-05-2006 05:09 Slifer | 125 posts

| as much as i love tool's deliberate deepness they put into many of their songs, i'm going to have to go ahead and say that those 3 tracks aren't meant to sync up. i mean, when you listen to it, at times in the song, sometimes it just sounds like downright noise. for instance, around 9:15, when the strong percussion usually kicks in in wings pt 2... when you combine the tracks as suggest by many people... it sounds like crap in my humble opinion. and also, towards the beginning, around the time when the lyrics "guide them home to zion" are said... there's areas around then when maynards vocals are almost canceled out by viginti tres. the only part where it would seem like an intentionl sync is at the very end of the combined song. however, i don't believe that was intended for a sync neccessarily, so much as it was just intended for the similar sound to further tie to two songs together (wings pt 1 and pt 2). i've even personally played around with the 3 songs in question, i've tried combining viginit tres and wings pt 1, then playing them together as a separte track wtih pt 2, i've tried overlaying the two, crossfading, and i can only conclude that they're not meant to sync. and the fact that wings pt 1 and pt 2 were originally meant to be a single track, played in that order... wouldn't that kind of make it hard to break that apart and play pt 1 after viginti tres? im going to express the same thing i heard on a different forum, that "somtimes a banana is just a banana." i could be wrong tho, but in my personal opinion, it just doesn't sound like music when you synch the 3. what does sound like beautiful music, is when you don't mess with the 3, and just play wings pt 1 then wings pt 2 in order, and keep it like that. | 12-07-2006 23:07 CruorEstVita | 3 posts
| for all those ppl who don't know what this song is about, allow me to educate you. This song, just like Judith, by A Perfect Circle, is a tribute to Maynard's mother, Judith Marie Keenan. The name, 10,000 days, refers to the time that she spent in a wheelchair after a stroke, 10,000 days roughly equates to 27-ish years, thus meaning "10,000 days in the fire is long enough, you're going home" meaning that she's suffered enough and that it's time for her to meet her maker, considering she recently passed away. And indeed, she did not go to hell, by Maynard's perspective, thus the name, Wings for Marie. Just as well, this is indeed a "letting you go" song, a farewell to Judith Marie Keenan. | 12-07-2006 23:07 CruorEstVita | 3 posts

| An absolutely incredible song! The timing of the transitions between themes within the song reminds me slighty of Jane's Addiction "Three Days", another absolutely amazing song of similar length. | 03-09-2006 08:03 evory111 | 1 posts

Isn't it odd how one's perspective of heaven can change after a death? I'm sure you all believe in hell, but remember that heaven is just as real. It's your decision where to go, and obviously someone like Maynard realizes that too. Either way, this is a good albumn and an awesome song. I prefer 10 000 Days to Lateralus, but old Tool is still so raw. | 29-09-2006 03:14 lacrymosa967 | 5 posts

Definately a great album if I was looking for something trippy. I hated Lateralus, so I don't listen to that as much, but I lurve Aenima. Aenima was more of a jam out album for me though, so trippy was APC's 13th step. No matter where Maynard was playing, his voice is phenominal and both APC and Tool really struck it in my heart as my favourite bands. I won't even talk about Undertow. It was kickass, but really different. | 11-10-2006 10:29 glow_child_glow | 1,553 posts

to me this song ties back to Judith, about his mom, saying, "Still you pray, you never stray
Never taste of the fruit
You never thought to question why" his mom maybe having a rough time in life, but her faith stands strong. maynard saying to her, how can u believe when i can show u how your god has abandoned you, "It's not like you killed someone
It's not like you drove a hateful spear into his side
Praise the one who left you
Broken down and paralyzed"
thats were wings comes in. and hes saying to his mother "i only pray, heaven knows when to lift you out
ten thousand days in the fire is long enough
you're going home
you're the only one who can hold your head up high
shake your fist at the gates saying:
i have come home now
fetch me the spirit
the son, and the father
tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
it's time now, my time now
give me my, give me my, wings"
so through all the heartach all the fire in her life not once did she turn from god. and she the only one who has the right to demand her wings, her place in heaven. and his moms faith is a witness to him.
set as i am in my ways and my arrogance
burden of truth tossed upon non-believers
you were my witness
my eyes, my evidence
judith marie, unconditional one

I agree with sSloth, Tool's lyrics are great (Especially on the song Lateralus), but the real treat is the symphonic, hypnotic, soul-shuddering blend of guitar, bass and maynard's voice that is Tool. This song is a great example. Long live Tool |
