Song lyrics
join in my.. join in my child
and listen.. digging through my old numb shadow

shadow's shedding skin, i've been picking scabs again
i'm down digging through my old muscles for a clue
i've been crawling on my belly clearing out what could've been
i've been wallowing in my own confused insecure delusions
for a piece to cross me over or a word to guide me in
i wanna feel the changes coming down
i wanna know what i've been hiding

in my shadow
my shadow
change is coming through my shadow
my shadow shedding skin
i've been picking my scabs again

join in my.. join in my child
shadow's closer to me...

i've been crawling on my belly clearing out what could've been
i've been wallowing in my own chaotic insecure delusions
i wanna feel the change consume me, feel the outside turning in
i wanna feel the metamorphosis and cleansing i've endured

in my shadow
my shadow
change is coming
now is my time

listen to my muscle memory
contemplate what i've been clinging to
forty six and two ahead of me

i choose to live and to grow
take and give and to move
learn and love and to cry
kill and die and to be
paranoid and to lie
hate and fear and to do
what it takes to move through

i choose to live and to lie
kill and give and to die
learn and love and to do
what it takes to step through

see my shadow changing
stretching up and over me
soften this old armor
hoping i can clear the way by
stepping through my shadow
coming out the other side
step into the shadow
forty six and two just ahead of me

It has something to do with human chromosones and evolution. Im not certain about what it is, so go ask a bio teacher, but it's something like this:
Basically currently whatever the numbers have to do with, humans have less, so maybe we are at 44 and 2, Im not sure about that. But if we were to have 46 and 2, we'd evole and essential become "superhuman", if you will.

"Soften this old armor..."

Breaking the old shell of a human to evole to the next.

That guy is a fukin genius.

this song has to do with what i believe is known as the jungian theory. Its basically consious evolution. The theory states that there are three stages of the mind, the first is a a primitive, but unified brain (as in a hive or collective) which consists of 44 chromosomes, the second stage is where we are which is basically a chaotic independant mess, 46 chromosomes... the song goes on..

"in my shadow
my shadow
change is coming through my shadow
my shadow shedding skin
i've been picking my scabs again "

to reach the next stage of a higher mindset, one would have to recognize the evil and pain of ones past, ones shadow.

"see my shadow changing
stretching up and over me
soften this old armor
hoping i can clear the way by
stepping through my shadow
coming out the other side
step into the shadow
forty six and two just ahead of me"

48 chromosomes is the supposed final stage of the conscious evolution of a species, arguably mental perfection.. thus the 46 and two

Responding to LivNINsular's post...:

The idea of Jungian philosophy and the "shadow" are also apparent in the song "Message to Harry Manback" and "Die Eier von Satan."

When you first heard Die Eier von Satan, you assumed it was some sort of Nazi speech or whatever, right? Well, it's a recipe for hash cookies.

Imagine you spoke neither English nor Italian. Would MtHB sound mean and insulting? No, the guy is speaking so calmly, it sounds like he could be leaving a simple reminder or something.

The thing is, don't rely on your first impressions. These songs are shadows of the other.

As for Forty-Six & 2, the song is awesome. Good opening bass riff. Once the main chorus sets in, I sometimes lose control of myself rocking out to this brilliant piece of art.

Five across.

Heh, I forgot some stuff...

The fact that the 2 is written seperately from the Forty-Six is significant. Why not just call the song 48? You see, humans have two chromosomes that define gender. Obviously, you only use one of them.

Which leads us back to the shadow. That chromosome you don't use contain all the qualities and traits directly opposite of what you really are. They're there, you just aren't using them.

This all comes back to Third Eye, as well. It's all so deep. I love it.

Lateralus goes even deeper.

this is why i love lsi... because you can come on here, and you know that when ur looking for the meaning to such a deep song there's going to be someone who knows a little more than you and you learn something because of it. to be quite honest i wasn't familiar with the jungian theory at all, but thanks to you guys im able to look into it now and appreciate this song even more than what i once did. 's good!

Actually, Kochipahk, males have and use BOTH sex chromosomes. All humans have 44 chromosomes in all, 42 are autosomes, the other 2 are the sex chromosomes which detirmine whether the person is male or female, males have an X and a Y chromosome, whereas females have two X chromosomes, just thought i'd add that.
anyway, this song is insane

Some quick work on Wiki reveals:

From "Jungian":

The shadow
The shadow is an unconscious complex that is defined as the diametrical opposite of the conscious self, the ego. The shadow represents everything that the conscious person does not wish to acknowledge within themselves. For instance, someone who identifies as being kind has a shadow that is harsh or unkind. Conversely, an individual who is brutal has a kind shadow. The shadow of persons who are convinced that they are ugly appears to be beautiful.

The shadow is not necessarily good or bad. It simply counterbalances some of the one-sided dimensions of our personality. Jung emphasized the importance of being aware of shadow material and incorporating it into conscious awareness. Otherwise we project these attributes onto others.

The shadow in dreams is often represented by dark figures of the same gender as the dreamer, such as gangsters or prostitutes or beggars or liars

Anima and Animus
Jung identified the anima as being the unconscious feminine component of men and the animus as the unconscious masculine component in women. (Many modern day Jungian practitioners believe that every person has both an anima and an animus). Jung stated that the anima and animus act as guides to the unconscious unified Self, and that forming an awareness and a connection with the anima or animus is one of the most difficult and rewarding steps in psychological growth. Jung reported that he identified his anima as she spoke to him, as an inner voice, unexpectedly one day.

Oftentimes, when people ignore the anima or animus complexes, the anima or animus vies for attention by projecting itself onto others. This explains, according to Jung, why we are sometimes immediately attracted to certain strangers: we see our anima or animus in them. Love at first sight is an example of anima and animus projection. Moreover, people who strongly identify with their gender role (e.g. a man who acts aggressively and never cries) have not actively recognized or engaged their anima or animus.

From Jungian Influences on Culture:

The progressive metal band, Tool, have incorporated ideas from Jung's work into their albums, especially Ćnima. Songs such as "Forty Six & 2" and "Ćnema" (the title of this song and the title of the album both being derived from Jung's anima) are particularly fraught with references
