| Song lyrics |
What's coming through is alive.
What's holding up is a mirror.
But what's singing songs is a snake
Looking to turn this piss to wine.
They're both totally void of hate,
But killing me just the same.
The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been.
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again.
And I feel this coming over like a storm again.
Considerately.
Venomous voice, tempts me,
Drains me, bleeds me,
Leaves me cracked and empty.
Drags me down like some sweet gravity.
The snake behind me hisses
What my damage could have been.
My blood before me begs me
Open up my heart again.
And I feel this coming over like a storm again [x2]
I am too connected to you to
Slip away, to fade away.
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me,
And considerately killing me [x4]
Without the skin,
Beneath the storm,
Under these tears
The walls came down.
And the snake is drowned and
As I look in his eyes,
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of those times.
I could have cried then.
I should have cried then.
And as the walls come down and
As I look in your eyes
My fear begins to fade
Recalling all of the times
I have died
and will die.
It's all right.
I don't mind.
I am too connected to you to
Slip away, to fade away.
Days away I still feel you
Touching me, changing me,
And considerately killing me [x2]
And considerately killing

The bass in the beginning is deep enough to shake souls and the lyrics are beautiful. "I don't care" is agressive and can be yelled, but the irony is when the emotion is behind "I don't mind," which is passive, yet sung so forcefully. I love this song, as well as the entire album. This song is brilliant. Sooo soothing. I actually enjoyed this a little too much. I was listening to this in the snow in the dark and consequently I almost died of hypothermia because of it. But it's alright, I don't mind. I don't mind. | 28-03-2005 01:43 Severon | 72 posts

One Of The Few Songs i Havent Been Able To Completely figure Out. I think Its About Dying With a regret (The Snake) But Before You Die Just Not Caring About It. I Just Dont c how the chorus fits in with that theory though.

What this song is about. Here goes:
Before I say anything else, just want to say that this isn't entirely my idea, but I think it is the most truthful (I added the part on the end). Devo Keenan, his son, has the middle name of H... not anything extra... just H. The song is about his son...think about the song. Maynard had a bad relationship with his father when he was young, constantly being abused. Even though he loves Devo, sometimes he has a problem, and wants to hurt him. He gets it from his father... and it causes him to want to lash out at his wife and his child. that's why when he says they're "void of hate, but killing him just the same"... he means that Devo loves him, but he's still hurting Maynard because of Maynard's past.... When he talks about "snake behind me hisses, what my damage could have been", he's talkin about how what his father did to him wants to resurge through him and onto Devo. then the next verse "my blood before me begs me, open up my heart again"... he's sayin that the blood before him (his children, future grandchildren, etc.) is begging him to forget the past and start over... Infer the rest of the song for yourself. | 09-08-2005 00:39 xMajinx | 13,401 posts

Man, so many of these songs are intertwined in meaning...
Okay, recall the song Jimmy. One of the lines say "Until 1 and 1 are 1." Look at the capital 'H'. It looks like an 11 with a line together. The song Jimmy keeps talking about 11. "Eleven lead me through each gentle step."
The fact that's his son's middle name is simply 'H' is interesting as well. It implies that, maybe, when Maynard was 11, his father did something so terrible to him that it changed him forever.
Recall another lyric from Jimmy: "I'll move to heal
As soon as pain allows so we can
Reunite and both move on together."
It sounds like Maynard wishes he could find his inner childhood, if you follow the theme of the song Jimmy, and fix whatever happened then. And it's all for his son.
The song H. here is simply a description of what is happening between him and his son. Jimmy is what he's trying to do to fix it.
Also note that Intermission sounds like a short stroll down the sidewalk as a child. Suddenly, life hits you, and you aren't ready for it, in a kind of way the main riff of Jimmy sort of jumps out at you.
I could go on forever... But I'll stop and give this songs 5 all across. | 06-01-2007 11:18 walaby375 | 3 posts

I've been sitting on a bootleg copy of Tool's set at Woodstock 1999 where Maynard introduces this song by talking about "those Warner Brothers cartoons" where there's the character who's having a tough time making a decision, and in the cartoons they have the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other. He goes on to state the somewhat obvious saying that the angel is telling the character to do whats good for him and the devil is telling him to do whats going to be bad. He then translates this metaphor by saying that "Sometimes it's not that easy, though" and that sometimes it's not angels or devils, they're just friends, and they are not easily defined as angels or devils. He also says that they are, of course, just looking out for your best interest, but what they say may not necessarily be the best choice for you, so it really comes back to you on making this decision.
I sympathize though, because I know i've over-analyzed MJK lyrics on many an occasion, to trace it back to personal issues/vendettas that he had that relates to his music, but I think that this is something else to respect about this man. To date, the only song that I can trace back to something personal is the song "Judith" by APC, which you can hear about from the horses mouth on the Amotion dvd. | 30-09-2008 22:16 finallyme | 1 posts
