Song lyrics
Black then white are
All I see
In my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be
Reaching out to me
Lets me see

As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn beyond the lines of reason
Push the envelope
Watch it bend

Overthinking
Overanalyzing
Separates the body from the mind
Withering my intuition
Missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel thy moment
Drawing way outside the lines

Black then white are
All I see
In my infancy
Red and yellow then came to be
Reaching out to me
Lets me see

There is
So much
More and
Beckons me
To look through to these
Infinite possibilities

As below, so above and beyond, I imagine
Drawn outside the lines of reason
Push the envelope
Watch it bend

Overthinking
Overanalyzing
Separates the body from the mind
Withering my intuition
Leaving opportunities behind

Feed my will to feel this moment
Urging me to cross the line
Reaching out to embrace the random
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come

I embrace my
Desire to
I embrace my
Desire to
Feel the rythym, to
Feel connected
Enough to step aside and
Weep like a widow, to
Feel inspired, to
Fathom the power, to
Witness the beauty, to
Bathe in the fountain, to
Swing on the spiral, to
Swing on the spiral, to
Swing on the spiral of
Our divinity and
Still be a human

With my feet upon the ground
I lose myself between the sounds
And open wide to suck it in
I feel it move across my skin
I'm reaching up and reaching out
I'm reaching for the random, for
Whatever will bewilder me
Whatever will be willed on me
And following our will and wind
We may just go where no one's been
We'll ride the spiral to the end
May just go where no one's been
Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out
Keep going
Spiral out
Keep going

This is an excelent song... of corse...

I would like to discuss the lyrics with anyone who would...

At the very base level, This song has alot to do with the phibinacci sequence methinks, but thats kinda as far as I go with it, something perhaps about... potential... of something... who knoweth.

personally I think it has a lot to do with meditation. I know "mantra" does, because a mantra is a word used to calm a certain part of the body or spirit. This sounds a lot like a song about meditation, too.

I read on toolshed that Mantra was Maynard squeezing his cat and tweaking the sound it made. I suspect it may be a hoax, but speed the track up. It sounds funky.

Fibbonaci, if I'm not mistaken.

Oh, and the black/white and red/yellow allusions are towards the Kabbalah: Keter (the god figure of the Kabbala Tree of Life) has black hair and a white headband that are viewed by people with little to no understanding. Once you gain knowledge and enlightenment, you are allowed to see his red and yellow aura.

At least, this is all if I've got my occultism correct.

In my opinion, one of Tool's best ever songs. Apart from Sober and Schism, Lateralus is probably their best.

I got high last night... put in my tool's greatest cd i made and listened to it with my pals.

"feed my will to feel this moment
urging me across the line
reaching out to embrace the random
reaching out to embrace whatever may come"

beautiful. the depth, darkness/light, meaning, and structure of this bands music is unrivaled. Tool makes me tremble. I pitty those who cant for some reason experience this band the way i do.

I was reading a book about the meanings of Tool's songs (http://www.vanillacircus.net/book/tool_book.pdf)
and the author mentioned that Black, White, Red, And Yellow are all parts of the Tree of Life, which just so happens to be in the shape of the Circles on the clear plastic case of Salival. Just and interesting connection.

i guess i missed ansible's post, but the Tree of Life is the same shape as the one on Salival.

not only does this track have a very deep meaning behind as you all have said, but it also exemplifies the spiral theme of the entire album.

it can't be Fibonacci because the numbers for that are as follows: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34

yah i was gonna mention that, i don't quite see how you guys think it has anything to do with the fibonacci sequence either, maybe im just not getting it, but from what i can understand there isn't much to do with that certain pattern of numbers.
