| Song lyrics |
Choices always were a problem for you
What you need is someone strong to guide you
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
What you need is someone strong to guide you
Like me
Like me
Like me
Like me
If you want to get your soul to heaven
Trust in me, now don't you judge or question
You are broken now but faith can heal you
Just do everything I tell you to do
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
What you need is someone strong to guide you
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
Let me lay my holy hand up, hand upon you
Thy god's will
Becomes me
When he speaks
He speaks through me
He has needs
Like I do
We both want
To rape you
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now?
Open my eye, blind me with your light now
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now?
Open my eye, blind me with your light now
If you want to get your soul to heaven
Trust in me, now don't you judge or question
You are broken now but faith can heal you
Just do everything I tell you to do
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now?
Open my eye, blind me with your light now
Jesus Christ, why don't you come save my life now?
Open my eye, blind me with your light now
Deaf and blind and dumb and born to follow
Let me lay my holy hand up, hand upon you
Thy god's will
Becomes me
When he speaks
He speaks through me
He has needs
Like I do
We both want
To rape you

I think this absolutely IS the best song ever written, lyrically...
Musically, it's good, great in fact... But I can't say its my absolute favorite peice of music in exsistance...
But holy jeez, the lyrics... oh god... Anyone can go around poking fun at things... But no one can do it like Maynard. | 07-11-2004 06:41 CourtKilledKurt | 12 posts
| I'm guessing this song is a refernece to Karl Marx calling religion the "opiate of society". So it's not really that original.
What's original is the song "Lithium" by nirvana instead of going along with what Marx said Kurt Cobian redefines it to say that religion is the "lithium of society". The lyrics to this song are awful and have very little meaning except making fun of christianity. This has been done many times before. It's full of overused ideas.
Lithium is a much better song and it's original.
For the most part tool sucks. They are talented but immature. A perfect circle is much better it's good to see maynard grow up a little. | 07-11-2004 07:29 the_BurnInAtOR | 3,204 posts
| Lol.. WOW, opiate to lithium. Thats deep shit.
INCORRECT. | 07-11-2004 07:29 the_BurnInAtOR | 3,204 posts
| Now, im confused, what could make for better lyrics than making fun of christianity?

i don't know how you could call a song unorginal beacause the title (which isnt in the song) makes a vauge reference to a quote. | 03-12-2004 21:44 CourtKilledKurt | 12 posts

in order to even begin to understand any of tools songs youve gotta learn to look outside the box, because yes it does seem like a direct hit on christianity, and the song prison sex also seems like its all about butsex, but i think everysong has emotional value that no one has the right to call unoriginal, until nirvana boy can come up with a better explanation for what this song is about, i move to have his commets ignored, because in order to put a good song down u have to understand it first, and i think we all need to understand things alittle better

| no actuallly both those songs are about exactly what you said
most of undertow and opiate is very blatant lyrically, but after that they got real intense

Man, to say Kurt Cobain can right a better song than someone, let alone Maynard James Keenan, is blasphemy in itself. This song is fantastic, and far better than anything Nirvana could ever dream of making. | 12-06-2005 18:04 DethMerchant | 10 posts

Some have said that it has a lot to do with Nietzsche's quote "Religion is the opiate of the masses", which directly correllates with Marx's quote, "Religion is the Opiate of the People". It is my belief, through examining these quotes, that we are somewhat sedated through religion, and anything that we are taught -- anything we are told -- will register as the ultimate truth. | 27-08-2005 18:33 purityofhell | 29 posts

Nirvana's music wasn't too bad, but it's completely rediculous to say that Kurt Kobain wrote music better than anybody.
While Nirvana's sound was decent, and likewise for Kobain's voice, I think his lyrical ability is completely over rated. You can often tell in Nirvana's music that he's just screaming incoherent phrases to make it sound good. Which is fine (people do it all the time), because that's what he was going for. Not so much deep, thought-provoking lyrics as whatever went best with the music, and whatever point he was trying to make often took a backseat to that.
Anyhow.
This song is about religion (not Christianity in particular, as someone said). I believe the point he is trying to make is that all your information about God and His Will is always funneled through someone else (ie. religious figures such as priests, rabbis, sofis).
So who's to say they're right, and just expressing their own desires and will, for their own purposes?
Thy god's will
Becomes me
When he speaks
He speaks through me
He has needs
Like I do
We both want
To rape you
He also (quite obviously) derides the arrogance of telling someone how to live their life, as if they have all the answers your not privy to, because of some perceived elevated status.
Good song, but I'm more a fan of Tool's heavier music. This is a pretty straight-forward song with a pretty straight-forward message:
Religion is the Opiate of the masses, doping us all up and relieving us of the responsibility of making our own choices, or making any attempt to know God ourselves, instead of taking the Pastor's word for it. | 07-05-2007 22:56 petotheopiate | 7 posts

omfg! bunch of morons this song is obviously about any power that trys to control your thinking i.e. telling you your stupid, blind, deaf, and a follower. "raping" your trust and beliefs, using authority or religion as a shield and sword! | 17-07-2007 03:08 loveis_music | 1 posts
