Something has to change
Undeniable dilemma Boredom's not a burden Anyone should bear Constant overstimulation numbs me But I would not want you any other way, 'cause It's not enough, I need more Nothing seems to satisfy I said, I don't want it, I just need it To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive Finger deep within the borderline Show me that you love me and that we belong together Relax, turn around and take my hand I can help you change Tired moments in to pleasure Say the word and we'll be well upon our way Blend and balance Pain and comfort Deep within you 'Til you will not want me any other way, but It's not enough, I need more Nothing seems to satisfy I said, I don't want it, I just need it To breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive Knuckle deep inside the borderline This may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to Relax, slip away Relax, relax Relax, relax Something's kinda sad about The way that things have come to be Desensitized to everything What became of subtlety? And how can this mean anything to me If I really don't feel anything at all? I'll keep digging till I feel something Elbow deep inside the borderline Show me that you love me and that we belong together Shoulder deep within the borderline Relax, turn around and take my hand |

216 posts | i haven't relly made up my mind of what the songs is all about, but i think its about either addiction or the opposite desensitization, both fit so well with the lyrics and the feel of the song |

1 posts | This is an essay i wrote on this song
Beyond the obvious creepy, skin chilling, make your hair stand up on end, but amazing sound of Tool, there is a type of poetry not usually found in modern day society. This type of writing was thought to be lost hundreds of years ago with authors like Shakespeare, however, despite the negative influences of Hip-Hop and R & B, a band and a song have emerged from the dust and bring us the cleanest, purest sound ever heard. Not only does this song have an original sound that differs from all before it, the issue influences all generations. Possibly one of the greatest songs written, Stinkfist will touch everyone who hears it and possibly those who don't. To start dissecting the complexity of a song like this, some basic information is needed on the general theme. Stinkfist has been interpreted in many different ways, some abstract, some not so much. My interpretation is "Stinkfist" discusses the psychological division between two parts of a drug users mind and the "voices" that he hears influencing his decisions and need for drugs. This is the interpretation that makes most sense considering nature of the band and sound of the song. The first voice heard is more lifeless and lingering. It's there for very little reason. It's not really trying to convince anyone. It is heard, but quiet. This gives us the feeling that this is not really what the "User" is thinking; it's just a subtle, beneath the scenes, in the back of your mind - thought. The opening lines to the song, said by the first voice, "Something has to change, undeniable dilemma, boredom's not a burden anyone should bear." These words are what most people sound like when they want to quit smoking. The lines basically say, "I need to quit now, I have a problem." But we don't believe him. The word boredom in this sentence does not necessarily represent the traditional meaning. It's possible that this word stands for "unhappy" or "depressed". The line, "boredom's not a burden anyone should bear," in essence means "no one should have to feel like this. Drugs are a horrible thing to do." The second voice heard on the track is an angrier, urgent, untamed voice. The statement made by this voice is going to be heard by the user. He says, "Just not enough, I need more. Nothing seems to satisfy. I said I don't want it, I just need it, to breathe, to feel, to know I'm alive." Essentially this voice is saying, "I don't want drugs, but I need it to survive." The voice sounds like it's convinced that this is the path it should go down. The chorus to the song is especially interesting. The voice heard in the chorus is one of a partner (boyfriend, girlfriend, wife etc.). It's trying to convince the person to go down a different path. Do a 180 and get fixed. The lines of the chorus are, "finger deep within the borderline. Show me that you love me and that we belong together. Relax, turn around and take my hand." This person is the savior for the user. He/she is trying to get the drug addict to quit their habit. Think of it in terms of, "If you love me, you will become sober." Now the line, "finger deep within the borderline," appears several times in the song with different variations. For example, "knuckle deep within the borderline" or "elbow deep within the borderline" or "shoulder deep within the borderline". All of these lines describe how consumed the user is from his/her addiction. The body parts mentioned are fingers, knuckles, elbows and shoulders. The finger is a very small portion of the body, signifies that he/she does not need the drug yet – hence not addicted. As the song progresses the parts get bigger and bigger until he/she is neck deep in their addiction and by then the song is over and too late. There is an interesting line of the chorus as well. It goes, "this may hurt a bit but it's something you'll get used to." The basic meaning for this line is rehab will be painful. Not necessarily physical pain, but possibly emotional, mental, some pain for not being able to have the drug or pain involving the partner. This line can effectively put together what drugs can do to your life. Not only will users feel pain when they take the drug, but on their downtime, time trying to get sober it will also be extremely painful. It is amazing to see how many families are affected by drug/alcohol. Not only is the user affected, but family, friends, distant cousins and even strangers. Tool does an amazing job describing the feelings experienced within the conscience of an addict. It is now clear to see the thoughts of an addict and the inner conflict that they have. The overall result in this song is total addiction, possibly death, but could there be another outcome? |

12 posts | This is the first Tool song that I really dug into and looked for meaning. I first read the lyrics, they didn't make much sense. Digging into it I really look at it as a conflict between drug and the addict. Relates a lot of known people doing drugs because they are bored. this song has so many meanings to people with different views. I dig it.
Something has to change Undeniable dilemma Boredom's not a burden Anyone should bear To me this song has a lot of meaning, I liked reading about whoever wrote about the war and societies push forward, gives me another way to look at this song. |

5 posts | the best inerpretation of the song I've heard (due to the fact that it is detailed is as follows.. a song with two voices, an addict, and the drug.. at the begining the addict "muses" if you will about the nature of the addiction, and needing more just to satisfy himself.. then the drug comes in again, tempting him to dig a bit deeper to find a higher comfort level (this may hurt a little but it's something you'll get used to) .. towards the end while slipping into that state of mind he realizes he's gone too far into his addiction, but it has taked control of him, and begins to question what is going on, how he's becoming desensitized by everything else around him, everything turned into his addiction. and once his shoulder is in the borderline, he knows he's done for, yet the drug will still keep tempting him further. |

4 posts | This song is incredible. Granted, the whole album has mediocre production, but the song is still great. I was thinking it was about anal fisting, but it could also be about heroin, or even both (you never know with tool).
Lots of people think that nobody would dare to write a song like this, but tool would! Like someone else said, the band's probably into all types of freaky shit |

Yes, yes. This song is so kickass. You really have to appreciate the music that comes from Tool, even if don't like it. It's just so smart, nothing like anything else. And by the way, the meaning is not about heroin, or 'fisting' either. It's a metaphor for the desensitiziation of our society. Like someone has said earlier, it's about how we have to push and push for things to be more shocking, until we get used to it. What became of subtlety? Tool owns. |

81 posts | "we don't care when we see dead boddies from the war. But if the new was to show some chick getting fingered by some guy, and the guy had his whole arm in... We would all be horrified."
Doesn't really take that much to chock worse then the wars dead bodies...all you need is to see a nipple on a football field (janet jackson btw...) |

4 posts | That was a little vague. I know no tool song is very simple and shallow. I meant that the song isn't really about fistfucking. But then again... it could be |

4 posts | I know htis song isn't a shallow and simple as it seems. I love how Tool uses metaphors to describe other things, which is in part why so many songs are open for interpretation. I love how their songs can be so dirty sounding. I love Maynard. |

4 posts | This is definetely my favorite tool song, and by the first time I saw these lyrics I knew the meaning was not supposed to be sexually based...you should know if you've learned Manyard's way of writing, though many of his songs do seem to be sexually based... |
