Eye on the T.V
Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor
It happens to be
Like...
“Killed by the husband”
“Drowned by the ocean”
“Shot by his own son”
“She used the poison in his tea
And kissed him goodbye”
That’s my kind of story
It’s no fun til someone dies
Don’t look at me like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the T.V
Stare like a zombie
While the mother holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky, crying
“Why, oh why?”
Cause I need to watch things die
From a distance
Vicariously I
Live while the whole world dies
You all need it too, don't lie
Why can’t we just admit it?
Why can’t we just admit it?
We won’t give pause until the blood is flowing
Neither the brave nor bold
Will write us the stories told
We won’t give pause until the blood is flowing
I need to watch things die
From a good safe distance
Vicariously I
Live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same so
Why can’t we just admit it?
Blood like rain falling down
Drawn by grave and ground
Part vampire, part warrior
Carnivore and voyeur
Stare at the transmittal
Sing to the death rattle
La la la la la la la-lie (x4)
Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
But pull your head on out you hippies
and give a listen
Shouldn’t have to say it all again
The universe is hostile,
So impersonal
Devour to survive
So it is, so it’s always been
We all feed
On tragedy
It’s like blood to a vampire
Vicariously I
Live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I

Awesome. And it's true too; we all do love hearing about some blood being shed. Why else would we have the news? Sad but true. | 24-04-2006 05:03 ciberfer | 3 posts

Not the best album, but they still are the best . The lyrics are kinda dark, but thats no surprise. These guys are tough. | 24-04-2006 17:38 Jimmy40 | 3 posts

I think the song lacks originality, the rythem of the song is nearly identical to schism, but it is an incredible song. I prefered Maynard's lyrics from the "Lateralus" album, but these aren't too bad. | 25-04-2006 19:02 Lord_Static | 3 posts

i did notice the similarity to schism and it lacks a lot of variety. the new CD is just okay compared to the others. but its still Tool so its still above most others. | 12-05-2006 00:30 Pandora |

| This song may resemble Schism, but it kicks the shit out of it irregardless.

Aaaah, love this song.
It's a bit more "emo-friendly" than their other stuff,
but it still "rocks shit up", so to speak.
I LOVE how Maynard sings in this song!

Yeah it has the same tone as schism but really its not very similar to it. The guitar seems like its distorted to the exact same sound and its played the same way but vicarious comes off as a much more epic song. But theyre both good songs and maynerds lyrics for vicarious are amazing, hes the best damn poet i know. | 09-08-2006 19:37 Cottrelli | 3 posts

Please don't ever refer to Tool as "emo-friendly" in any way. It's degrading to everyone who ever has or ever will enjoy Tool.
Silverstar, if you don't have a review of the song, don't even bother making a post. Just because you're dissatisfied with the album doesn't mean you have to clutter the reaction pages for the songs.
In any case, the song was good, though not as good an opener for an album as The Grudge for Lateralus, in my opinion. | 20-08-2006 20:39 BornSlippy22 | 8 posts

This song was a great introduction to the album ... picked up where Triad left off - nice and hard. The double-bassing at the end of this song is sick, right while Maynard lets out his last "VICARIOUSLY IIIIIII!" ... sick. | 06-09-2006 18:20 lateralus17 | 3 posts
| I see maybe a small similarity to schizm, but the thing is it doesn't really matter to me. The song is still surrounded by beautiful music, and of course it's Maynards poetry. I completely agree with the fact that people feed off of sadness, and violence for thrill in their lives. It's not that the television is an awful invention, it's the way people today are addicted to it's thrill of insanely stupid reality t.v shows, and lure of tragic plot. Once again Maynard points out the fact that people need to open their eyes, and minds!!!! | 23-12-2006 22:39 MNome | 20 posts

It is real sad to see judgemeant from mindless people who do not even matter to this pathetic world we call Earth.....That fact is this song (No matter how much you thought it sounded like some other song) is their own and made for their voice. It makes me sick that a fan would sit there and find a way to say a negative...People like that ruin this world....Now this song...I noticed this about two years ago in high school how this world reacts to "Drama" . even tho it is sad, it makes ratings wich provides jobs to those who transfer the same information in which I despise alot...I actually grew hate and anger towards this world because of this NEWS....everyday it's the same thiing with a differnt person......Look at the Anna Nicole Simth Story...We as people have no reason even to know what is going on...and why do you think the story is all over the place....The world is sick....Who am I to say this...I am just another fuck who Just lives with out purpose and realize how much I hated this world..Over the time of Begining and the time of End of time we will realize one thing....How much it does not matter....
This song is great.....

| Heyheyhey, just to make one thing clear, I wasn't calling Tool emo in any way, Tool is the best band ever. I'm sorry if you got the wrong idea.
Although when I think about it, the emo-friendly comment was kinda dumb.
So sorry about that.
Anyfruit, I'll just restate my previous opinions; Wonderful song.
But that's fairly obvious, considering it's a Tool song. I believe they are completely incapable of making music that is not amazing. | 06-06-2007 12:53 insidethisbody | 2 posts

I love this song, it's my 2nd or 3rd favorite on this album, mainly because of the awesome sounding combination of guitar and bass in the intro, although it does remind me of schism a lil bit lol. ANother great part of the song is the outro, that guitar and drum bit is so cool. All hail Tool. | 15-01-2009 14:41 Dannya182 | 23 posts

I really can't get my head around just how Maynard is able to come up with such perfect lyrics. He seems to get it perfect every single time. The lyrics are so chillingly true; makes you think about just how sadistic the human race really is. Maynard is easily the best songwriter around, and I would be impressed to hear of anybody else able to come close to Maynard's ability to put such thought, such emotion, and such horrible truth into their lyrics.
It amazes me. It really really does. I just hope all the guitar hero fanboys don't start ruining the band and the fan's credibility. I'm sure each Tool fan prides themselves on their passion and ability to recognise true music in Tool. I know I do. |
