Tracy Chapman appeared in 1988 with the hit "Talkin' Bout A Revolution", followed by "Baby Can I Hold You". 21 years later, the singer is still on top because her new album sold 100,000 copies, led by the Airplay of her single "Sing For You".
"Talkin' Bout A Revolution" (N°22 in 1988) & "Baby Can I Hold You" singer is back with a new album ! 3 years after Where You Live (N°7 in 2005), Tracy Chapman released her album Our Bright Future in November 2008. Her eighth album, including 11 songs recorded in Los Angeles & co-produced by Larry Klein, hasn't been under the Top 15 since its release & just sold 100,000 copies ! A real commercial success.
Born in Cleveland, Tracy Chapman contributed to folk music in the 80's. With overwhelming lyrics & simple melodies, playing guitar, she has been influenced by Bob Dylan. In 1986, a student in Tufts University, where she studied ethnology, welcomed her to his father Charles Koppelman, a musical editor. Helped by him & Elliott Roberts, Neil Young & Joni Mitchell's manager, she signed to Elektra in 1987. The following year, her self-titled debut album became successful thanks to the hit "Fast Car" & she performed for Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday in London. She became the leader of female folk, followed by Suzanne Vega, Joan Armatrading, Shawn Colvin & 10,000 Maniacs. Her 2 following albums Crossroads in 1989 & Matters Of The Heart in 1992 got moderate success, for critics & for the audience. It's hard to do better than her magnificent first album. Tracy Chapman's got a particular voice in female singer-songwriters, filling concert halls : in 2009, here she comes again !
Also, after her concerts in France in December 2008, at Paris' Folies-Bergères, the singer is currently on tour in Europe.
