Grammy-nominated singer, Vanessa Carlton was born in a tiny town of Pennsylvania on 16th August 1980, this musician was listening to music before she was born, as her mother performed various classical pieces in the home's piano. At the age of two, Carlton and her parents went to Disney World, where she heard "It's A Small World." Falling in love with the song, she discerned the song's melody on the piano when she returned home. Having composed her first piano piece at age eight, Carlton was exposed to a wide array of music, from Debussy to Pink Floyd. At 14, she was accepted into the School of American Ballet in New York, where she lived in a dorm in the famous Lincoln Center. But, after being in the top of her class, she became frustrated at the strictness of the discipline. This frustration led to her playing a nearby piano within the dorm, from which a multitude of songs began forming. After waitressing in Lower Manhattan and living in Hell's Kitchen, her talents were soon noticed and she was signed on Interscope Records where she began to record her record.

Carlton achieved her breakthrough success in 2002 with the release of her debut single “A Thousand Mile.” The single was smash hit which peaked inside of top five on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and was also featured as a soundtrack for Reese Witherspoon’s movie Legally Blonde. She released her debut album in April 2002. Follow-up single "Ordinary Day", however, was less successful, and the final single, "Pretty Baby", failed to chart on the Hot 100.

Carlton promoted the album with a performance on MTV’s TRL, Rosie O'Donnell’s show and was also mentioned in Rolling Stone as one of ten artists to watch in 2002. She was also frequently compared (both positively and negatively) to other singer-songwriters like Norah Jones, Avril Lavigne, and Michelle Branch who rose to prominence at around the same time as she. By the end of 2002 “Be Not Nobody” was certified platinum. In 2003 Carlton received Grammy Award nominations for "Record of the Year", "Song of the Year", and "Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s)" for "A Thousand Miles".

In November 2004, Carlton released her second album “Harmonium.” The first single released from the album was “White Houses” which she premiered and performed on MTV’s TRL. Carlton described the song about a young woman losing her virginity after making a foolish, regrettable mistake. A critic for Billboard magazine said of the song: "it bears the do-it-my-way signature of a singer/songwriter who relies on piano; a meandering, storytelling lyrical style; and deceptively sweet vocals that underlie an intellectual bent ... The result is a highly original composition that makes you really want to listen and understand — and then sing along." Slant magazine named “White Houses” as the sixth best single of 2004, writing: "[it's] the kind of song that truly cements a career ... poignant, bloody, fleeting, and beautiful, much like adolescence".Blender magazine ranked "White Houses" at number forty-three on its "100 Best Songs of 2004" list. Despite praise from critics the single reached number 86 on the Hot 100. Its video was also banned from most channels including MTV due its explicit lyrics thus limiting it success and exposure. Harmonium debuted outside the top twenty on the Billboard 200 album chart and was a commercial failure; consequently, Carlton left A&M Records in mid-2005.

After three years break as well touring side by side, Carlton released her third sophmore album “Heroes & Theives” in October 2007 under the The Inc. Records to critical aclaim (the highest critical praise for Carlton during her career), with the single carrier "Nolita Fairytale." For the album Vanessa collaborated with rock legend Stevie Nick and also worked with singer/songwriter Linda Perry. With very limited press and promotion the album debuted on number 48 in US but has received mostly favourable reviews from the critics.
