This is a newsflash for people who might not have been following singer/songwriter/musician Vienna Teng's recent activities. In Oct '08 her blog indicated her new album was in the final stages of recording. In December, a blurb appeared on the Rounder Records website about the album. Now it's official! Her website has been updated with news, preorders, and links to an EPK.
The new album, titled Inland Territory, will be released on April 7, 2009. It will be her second album on the Zoe/Rounder Records label. There will be 12 tracks, all new songs. She has performed several of the songs at various live concerts. All preorders up until the release date will receive a free autographed postcard.
From what I've heard, the new album sounds a lot more "artsy" -- in that the process of creating the sound has taken a very central role, as compared to the final product. By that I mean there was a great deal of effort put into how and where the music for the new album was created. I'm not saying that there isn't emphasis placed on how the music sounds in the end, but when you make the process very important, the final product is always a remnant of that process, rather than the full culmination of it. This is the kind of thinking you see behind modern art and gourmet restaurants: the final product you contact is a "mark" on the present that you appreciate because of the story/meanings behind it.
I harbor some fears that Vienna's music will become less accessible if her music goes in that direction. Out of her previous three albums, I still enjoy the first, Waking Hour, the most. All of her albums were good, but the first struck me as the most...direct. Her songwriting and piano ability were simply and starkly visible on that album, and I liked that. The effect of that ability was diluted behind more studio production and layers of other sounds and instruments on her subsequent works. In any case, it's too early to say much now, and I do look forward to hearing how her sound has evolved. |
