AboutWang Leehom is also often credited as Leehom Wang (several of his songs--mostly ones with all English lyrics--can be found under that name on Let's Sing It.) Since the surname traditionally comes first in Chinese names and Wang is known in both Asia and the United States, his name appears in both forms in different contexts.

Wang Leehom was born May 17, 1976 in Rochester, NY, the second of three sons of Taiwanese immigrants to the United States. He became interested in music at age three when his older brother Leo began taking violin lessons. He begged his mother to put him in lessons as well, but she made him wait until he was six. As soon as he was allowed he threw himself enthusiastically into studying music. After studying the violin for several years, he picked up the piano, the guitar, and the drums. He now plays at least ten instruments, including several classical Chinese instruments not often studied in the West.

Wang attended Williams College in Massachusettes, where he double majored in Music and Asian Studies. He was offered his first record deal while visiting his grandparents in Taiwan when he was only 19. He later signed a contract with Decca Records and released three albums with them. He has since released ten albums with Sony Music. His first album with Sony, *Revolution* (1998) was considered a professional breakthrough, earning him two Golden Melody Awards. The album was released not long after Wang graduated with honors from Williams College. He went on to further studies in Berklee College of Music's Professional Music program.

During the 1990s, Wang's music primarily featured light R&B and pop sounds. In the early 2000s he began to branch out into swing, dance pop and heavy guitar-based rock. Some of the tracks on his last several albums (most notably *Shangrila*--2004 and *The 18 Martial Arts*--2010) have blended samples of Chinese ethnic minority folk music, Peking and Kunqu opera, and Chinese orchestra music with R&B and hip hop forms. He calls this style "chinked-out." He usually composes the music for his own songs, although he often uses lyrics written by other people.

In addition to composing, producing, and performing music, Wang has acted in several films, including Ang Lee's *Lust, Caution* and Jackie Chan's *Little Big Soldier.* In 2010 he wrote, directed, and starred in his own film, *Love in Disguise* He played a pop star like himself who enrolls in a classical Chinese music school, disguising himself as a peasant, to pursue a girl student he admires. Wang has said he "doesn't think he is much of an actor" but he enjoys appearing in movies because he gets to spend time with other creative people.
