Whitney Houston divorce from Bobby Brown

Updated Sept. 15, 2006 -- Just a few days after it was announced that Whitney Houston had filed for divorce from Bobby Brown, it seems that Karrine "Supahead" Steffans has welcomed him to her place with open arms. In fact, The New York Daily News is reporting that Brown was at Steffans' Los Angeles digs when he was served with the divorce papers. Sources even say that Steffans’ footed Brown’s cell phone bill. Though it had been rumored that Steffans had been cheating with Brown, she maintains the two are simply friends. Remaining unusually tight-lipped, Superhead told the paper, “I can’t break up a 16-year marriage in a few months. I’m not that super.”

As previously reported, Houston's publicist, Nancy Seltzer, revealed to the Associated Press that the singer has split from her hubby of 14 years, singer Bobby Brown. "I can just confirm that she has filed for divorce," Seltzer said. Brown was reportedly served with the legal documents on Tuesday.

Although Seltzer says that Houston filed for divorce, Brown's attorney, Phaedra Parks, insists that is not the case. "It is a legal separation. It is not a divorce or a divorce petition," she said. It is believed that the papers were filed in California.

Though Houston's filing seems like a sudden move, it may have actually been a long time in the making. A source told Daily News’ Rush & Molloy columnists that the two had lived apart in recent months. Still, Houston's filing for divorce hit Brown hard. “It’s not like Bobby didn’t see this coming… but it was a blow,” the source said. “He said, ‘Let’s get some beers. I need to gather my senses.’”

Since the couple's 1992 vows, their union has been one for the gossip books. At the time, many wondered what would draw Houston, who was music's darling at the time, to bad boy Brown. Whitney would give birth the following year to the couple's only child, Bobbi Kristina. Over the course of the next 13 years, the duo would face rumors of domestic abuse, drug abuse and Brown's repeat arrests. On last year's hit reality show, "Being Bobby Brown," the couple invited viewers into their home, a move that seemed to show the world that though dysfunctional, the union could possibly stand the test of time. Most recently, Houston reportedly checked into a drug treatment facility, while Brown attempted an ill-fated reunion with his former group, New Edition.

Since leaving rehab, Houston seems to be making an attempt to clean up her tainted image. Though currently in the studio working on new material, she made a surpise appearance Tuesday night at "The Society of Singers Presents the 15th Annual Ella Award honoring Johnny Mathis" in Beverly Hills, AccessHollywood.com reports. Accompanied by music industry vet Clive Davis and her cousin, Dionne Warwick, Houston reportedly looked anything but sad as she posed for pictures at the event.
