XTC was one of the smartest — and catchiest — British pop bands to emerge from the punk and new wave explosion of the late '70s. From the tense, jerky riffs of their early singles to the lushly arranged, meticulous pop of their later albums, XTC's music has always been driven by the hook-laden songwriting of guitarist Andy Partridge and bassist Colin Moulding. While popular success has eluded them in both Britain and America, the group has developed a devoted cult following in both countries that...

@ Respectable Street

This song is brilliant in its own way. I love the guitar at the beginning. A lot of the time XTC is more focused on their lyrics than on their melody, but I think that this song shows how they can still pack meaning into their words and carry an eccentricly catchy tune at the same time. I blast this in my car frequently .

@ King For A Day

King for a Day is probably my favorite by XTC. It's also the first song I heard by them. I just love the melody and the harmony. Just the music would be fun to listen to. This song is ace

@ Dear God

this is one of my favorite songs about religion, it sums up a lot of things that i believe in, i think most people get offensive about it is because they feel like its attackin them and telling them your wrong, when its only a matter of opinoin, he's not saying this is the right and only way for everyone to follow, just him, i'm sure no one is goin to reply but sweet_nuthin, who the hell is "they", do "they" know everything about anything?

@ Dear God

You all should see the video to this song to really understand the artist's conception.

It's black and white. Very dark. A huge tree with all sorts of people sitting on limbs. The tree represents religious and a little boy is sitting at the bottom of the tree and the song is the questions he is asking of God. As he is singing he song, he starts hitting the tree with a little hammer and although he and his hammer are very small compared to the tree, it causes the tree to rumble and shake and the people fall from it's branches. The boy's questions about God are shaking the faith of the people who have become too comfortable sitting in their precarious positions. It's one of the most artisitically beautiful videos I've ever seen. As another song said, the song isn't about denying God's existence. It's about questioning God's role in our lives through the eyes of a child.

"...We only want what's best for him..."
Cynical song featuring relentlessly rumbling drums and rollicking guitars.
