I really hope you reply to this, this is a GREAT song. It is a question, a question to "God", not of "God". He is asking for help and asking for proof. In the religion of never-question-your-faith christianity these things happen. War and Poverty among MANY MANY other things. The only paith that is true is faith that rises from questions. Please feel free to reply to this. I love a good discussion.

He is too angry and this song is probably the reason why not alot of people like XTC. He only finds the bad in the world and never thinks about all the beautiful things. Maybe one day when they're older they'll realize things.

Those are important questions, sheesh there's no reason for you christians to get so defensive about your faith, i mean unless you're secretly questioning it or something. Each to his own.

And a lot of the stuff in the song is questioning the interpretation of the bible...cause i think most peopel in the world believe it was written by men so its a legit question.

I love this song though i prefer Sarah McLachlin's (sp?) cover.

The song seems more like it is putting God down or denying that He is even real! It doesn't appeal to me... Sorry if I offended you earlier!

oh and p.s. to reply specifically to OH_SWEET_NUTHIN "Maybe when they're older they'll understand things"? you know this song came out in the eighties and they were relatively older when they wrote it. its not like they were little kids or anything. just a bit of info.

Yeah, I knew that. But older is somewhere around 50. They say most people don't really understand the world until they've accaully spent more than half their lives in it. I'm just going by what I've read. To be honest it would be interesting to hear what they feel about their song now. I have no idea where or if they're still around.

You all should see the video to this song to really understand the artist's conception.

It's black and white. Very dark. A huge tree with all sorts of people sitting on limbs. The tree represents religious and a little boy is sitting at the bottom of the tree and the song is the questions he is asking of God. As he is singing he song, he starts hitting the tree with a little hammer and although he and his hammer are very small compared to the tree, it causes the tree to rumble and shake and the people fall from it's branches. The boy's questions about God are shaking the faith of the people who have become too comfortable sitting in their precarious positions. It's one of the most artisitically beautiful videos I've ever seen. As another song said, the song isn't about denying God's existence. It's about questioning God's role in our lives through the eyes of a child.

this is one of my favorite songs about religion, it sums up a lot of things that i believe in, i think most people get offensive about it is because they feel like its attackin them and telling them your wrong, when its only a matter of opinoin, he's not saying this is the right and only way for everyone to follow, just him, i'm sure no one is goin to reply but sweet_nuthin, who the hell is "they", do "they" know everything about anything?
